    Prickly Ash

What is everyone's posture toward prickly ash on your farm. We have a lot of it popping up recently. It is native, so when I asked our state forester, she said it's good cover, so she doesn't have a problem with it. It doesn't look like it is a preferred browse for deer. How helpful is it for...

    Boots recommendations for western hunt

Going on my first mountain hunt in September to Idaho for bear. Researching the best boot. My only criteria is that I have a bunch of points built up on my Cabela's card, so I plan to purchase from Cabela's/Bass Pro. :-) Right now, I'm leaning towards a non-insulated Kenetrek boot. Any input...

Tim Waltz attack on deer farms. Whose farm is next?

Opinions about deer farms aside, the implications for property rights for our neighbors in Minnesota is real. Worth a listen all the way to the end. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/lonesome-lands/id1693902186?i=1000744041298

    Taxes on Timber Harvest

Any recommendations for a forester that can do a tax basis on a timber stand in southwest Iowa?

    Big rains last night

4.0" yesterday and today. Still coming. Came hard yesterday. Today it is more of a soaker. Needed. Should get a good start on filling the ponds back to the culverts.

    Alfalfa mix?

We are planting 4 acres of alfalfa to be bailed for deer and horses. Considering mixing in some timothy grass or clover. Any input / insights / experience on a mix vs pure alfalfa stand?

    Best step-through eBike

Will do! I can say I was impressed with how easy it folded up and packed into our mid-size SUV. And unpacked this morning in literally 45secs. :) We got their low-end model for the low center of gravity and low cost. As it's for my 70+ yo father, he'll be the one actually using it this fall.

    MINERAL TO PUT OUT NOW…

My gut is that they are not quite as effective as putting it on the ground. But they do get used. And I like that better than covering them up during season. I drill two 1/4" holes in the bottom, which seems to help the water to drain if I put a small stick underneath to there is space between...

DNR to host Western Iowa deer population meetings in July

The DNR meetings are starting tonight. I'll be at the one tonight in Atlantic. Will see what they have to say. https://www.iowadnr.gov/About-DNR/DNR-News-Releases/ArticleID/5044/DNR-to-host-Western-Iowa-deer-population-meetings-in-July

    2 acre bean food plot

Thanks! I was planning on drilling: * 8lbs GS (per ac) * 27lbs soy beans * 5 lbs cow peas (some left overs) All of this would be last year's seed. Here is my math for one food-lot that is in the QuailSafe CRP program. I used a 1.5 multiplier since it was last year's seed. Input welcome! :-)
