Deer to blame for poor timber quality?

I couldn’t help but think “I sure would like to introduce this guy to Skip!” while reading. Pure nonsense!

Deer to blame for poor timber quality?

This article was in my local paper today. Thought it was interesting that the deer are to blame for the poor timber quality in Iowa…. https://www.telegraphherald.com/sports/local_sports/article_0e687171-d042-4732-b1ef-ce3c94bbf88b.amp.html

    Thoughts on Ethanol and Biofuels

I agree that it will go away someday and that is part of the concern for me when suddenly ~50% of the crops grown in Iowa are no longer needed. That would be detrimental to a lot of farmers around here. I don’t believe the world would starve if the RFS was eliminated because currently half of...

    Thoughts on Ethanol and Biofuels

In a recent article I read it stated that the current average mpg in the US was 22 and if that were to increase by just 2mpg to 24mpg it would equate to all of the gasoline “saved” from using an ethanol blend. To me it just seems like such a scam. A program that is likely worse for the...

    Thoughts on Ethanol and Biofuels

I am curious as to what everyone’s thoughts are on the ethanol industry here in Iowa. Especially that of the farmers on this forum. I have been contemplating about getting into row crop farming and it had me thinking about the future of corn and soybeans. Currently roughly 40% of corn grown in...

    Food plots in CRP/Wetland Reserve

I am starting to get a game plan together for what I’d like to do for food plots this spring and want to establish a few new plots. Some of the plots that I would like to start would be in areas that are enrolled in CRP and in Wetland Reserve programs. I called the local NRCS office and was told...

    First Time Broadcasting Soybeans

After finally getting some rain I have some beans growing! We got almost 2” of rain on June 24th. Got just under a half inch last night. I took this picture yesterday morning. Keep the rains coming!

I did chisel plow and disc the plot so the soil was relatively loose. It wasn’t perfect, but was loose. Still had a bit of residue on top unfortunately. Next year I’m going to shoot for earlier for sure. Looks like there is a decent chance for some rain tomorrow so we’ll see what happens!

    First Time Broadcasting Soybeans

It’s always a learning experience that’s for sure! Definitely going to try and get them in earlier next year. We’ll see what happens in the next month. If we get some rain and I get a few beans to pop up, great! If not, on to plan b.

    First Time Broadcasting Soybeans

I pulled a harrow section over the plot a few times to try and work them in the best I could. It covered a majority of them, but there was still a few sitting on top after that.

    First Time Broadcasting Soybeans

I made my first attempt at a soybean plot this year. On the June 11th I broadcasted 50lbs of Eagle Seed Wildlife Mangers mix on my roughly half acre plot. We have had maybe a few tenths of rain since planting. Nothing has germinated yet. I’m starting to think this plot may be turning into a...
