    Swamp Bur Oak Hybrid

A few swamp burs I planted back in 2017. Clay soil, almost always wet. Had acorns the past couple of years at least.

    An Old Warrior

For those wondering, that picture is the entry side. I got the front lung almost square but the arrow deflected down and back and I only clipped the back side lung and liver.

    An Old Warrior

Going in to the season, I didn't have a stud buck to hunt so I set my sights on an old bully buck I had a lot of history with. The evening on November 9 was one of the crazier hunts I've experienced. I watched this guy run off about 12 other bucks from a hot doe. The final buck to try was nice...

    Buying land in your 20s

When saving up for the down payment, you have to be invested in equities to keep up with inflation. Open a brokerage account with Vanguard or Fidelity and auto invest every month into a growth mutual fund. I tried just using CDs and that was a big mistake I made that cost me 5+ years. Also, have...

No till drill, planting & details - video

I would suggest a forage bean variety. I use Eagle seed beans and I would say 70% or so stand back up. I've tried ag beans, they break off pretty easy and don't stand back up so well.

No till drill, planting & details - video

If weeds are a problem, you might consider beans for your spring planting. That will give you herbicide options to be weed-free going in to fall. In the fall, I drill my rye mix right in to the standing beans. Then the following spring, I drill beans into the rye and crimp the rye. This rotation...

Split G3 Buck - Final Chapter

In 2023, I saw him almost every time I went out, but he had broken off the opposite G3 from the split. I had him twice at 20 yards during bow season and my uncle passed him during gun season. He seemed to be a home body but also didn't mind being on his feet during daylight. After verifying...

    FISHING ‘24! GO!

Went up with the family to the Canada Lake of the Woods for some R&R. Little guy had a blast, spent most of the time playing in the minnow bucket, and loved napping on boat rides. Walleye fishing was pretty good, it was just a little slow since it was sunny and calm most of the time.

    CRP Design Question

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm definitely wanting to get this done this year. Cover/sanctuary are the limiting factors in the area so the sooner I can get those established, the better. The farm hunts really small right now with the open ag fields and road frontage.

    CRP Design Question

I am wanting to sign up some fields for CRP this fall. I contacted my nearest Pheasants Forever biologist and they put together the below plan. I like hunting pheasants but want to design this for deer first. Road screening is obviously one of my biggest goals. This is my first CRP sign up so...

    Permanent conservation easements- tax question

A permanent easement will be taxed as a long-term capital gain (instead of ordinary income). You can also use the basis in the farm to offset the income.

    Land prices / insane!!!

They were from the area but don't own any adjoining ground. Across the road to the west is public hunting and we're surrounded by ag.

    Land prices / insane!!!

Had a land auction today in north central Iowa with 3 tillable tracts and a 15 acre timber (more like scrub brush) tract that butted against my farm. The first 2 tillable tracts were not great and went for 7,100 and 6,750 and I thought maybe I'll get the timber for a decent price... NOPE, I let...
