Here's a twist on this subject. Yesterday I went shed hunting on public ground that I've wanted to bow hunt for several years. This area does not have very good access to some parts unless its done by boat on the river. Since the river is now frozen over its no big deal to get on to that ground...
On my fixed stands I keep a cord with a clip attached. This year I noticed on one of my stands that the cord had a small cut in it but didn't think it was enough to worry about. Wrong, one evening when lowering my bow down the cord broke and I watched my bow fall about 14' to the ground. Luckily...
My youngest boy and I went out after he got home from school. The wind was absolutely brutal but I did see some deer moving. The boy filled a doe tag about 45 minutes after being in the stand.
I haven't see any sign of rut yet. I've had 13 deer go past my stand in the last two nights, all normal behavior. Of course the biggest buck went by just out of my range.
