I grew up in NE IA and still hunt a fair amount up there and in my opinion the area I hunt is overrun with piss poor genetics of short tined 8 pts. Theres plenty of good deer up there but a lot harder to come by. My buddies and I have beat this horse to death over a lot of silver bullets. I'll get crucified for saying this but I personally think there was better bucks in a few particuliar areas I hunt when there were more shotgunners killing those so called 3 yr old 8 pts that were going to be a "stud next year" off and not allowing them to live to 7 years old and reproduce those genetics. When in reality they were already as good as they were going to get. I will say this past year I saw a lot better quality of deer up there but still not close to what I see in southern IA.
