CW and I were up bright and early to pound some public here in central iowa this morning. There was a lot of gobbling around us, but nothing close enough to be excited about. We sat under the same tree we had luck under last year and at about 6:50 a bird gobbled and it seemed like he was heading our way. Pretty soon the turkey whisperer spotted the tom and said he was coming right in. I could hear the tom spitting and drumming as it closed the distance. It was coming in to my hard left and eventually it stepped out onto the old road bed at 20 yards. I patiently waited for my opportunity…got a little antsy and the tom saw me move. Deciding it’s now or never, I went for it….promptly missed, and then dropped the bird with shot number two as it was flying off.
When you kill a turkey with CW, you get to enjoy a cosmic brownie as a sort of victory dance….todays brownie had been in the vest since last year and looked like deer jerky. We decided to avoid an early death from food poisoning. There had already been 2 other near deaths that morning already, me from sweating, and Curtis from low blood sugar! It was a great morning in the woods!
