So Dakota elk hunting

South Dakota just announced that they are going to offer unlimited elk tags east of the Missouri River. The catch, none will be allocated for nonresident hunters. Are NRLO’s going to whine & moan? I’m sure of it, but the fact that they straight up from the beginning said “0” NR Tags would be offered is impressive. Considering it’s unlimited tags, I’m sure they could have made thousands yet weren’t tempted by the $$$. Too bad our politicians don’t ignore the outside influences.

There’s hardly a huntable population. Non res can’t hunt Elk anywhere in SD so it’s not much really a new issue. Great for them for continuing to look out for residents tho

I’m curious what the reasoning for this was? Unlimited tags for something that for the most part doesn’t exist other than just passing through during the rut?

I think there are some causing damage to crop by Pierre? I’m not sure .

I was told you can get a NR cow elk tag West River if you own land . In one area… same thing, some drop damage issue. Might be depredation tag ?

If they had no $ motives- I at least applaud that. I’m sure there’s an angle - like above mentioned crop damage. Unlimited tags sure doesn’t sound like the wisest thing but I don’t know the situation.

If any game agency put the resource first, $ second - they would almost always make more $ in the long term. Any big game animal- restrict so the resource is great & of a quality balance…. That always creates demand …. When that demand exceeds supply of said quality resource - u can price it accordingly. COMMON SENSE Economics & sound game management. Yet- common sense isn’t common in today’s day & age. I do think it’s getting better with time in relation to hunting but we have a lot ground to gain in the years ahead across the nation.
