A second ARCHERY tag in Iowa??

The first time I bow-hunted the rut, I could not believe my eyes. “Where are all these bucks coming from? I never see them.” That was over 25 years ago but I remember thinking that like it was just yesterday. Honestly, I think this proposal would be a near complete disaster for buck age...

    Sources for AA lithium batteries?

I started using (Amazon) Energizer Lithium AA in all of my cams a few months ago. Just starting to realize how incredibly bad and inconsistent these batteries are. I’ll be switching back unless someone can recommend a reliable brand.

    Worst food plots ever!!

I started from scratch 2 years ago with no tillable acres, no equipment and no experience. The dry weather the last two years has proven to be an enormous challenge. I did get two additional 1/3 acre plots opened up, turned to tillable and no till drilled with alfalfa this year. The deer are...

    Ozonics

One day last fall I had a doe walk past my tree and turn downwind into my Ozonics stream. I was familiar with this particular doe and she was known to be freaky cautious. Had she smelled me (human), I believe 100% she would have snorted and turned on the jets. Instead she seemed to notice the...

    Interesting camera pics!

That’s certainly a possibility and probably all of us have had arrows deflect off of branches that we simply did not see. I can honestly say that has happened to me at least a couple of times over the years. On the other hand, I know people personally that routinely stick arrows in deer...

    Interesting camera pics!

Glad to see it’s gone. Pictures of arrows stuck in deer absolutely make me cringe. They deserve better than that.

Convert Sloped Cattle Pasture to Habitat

What’s in the seed bank is never what I want. I’m new at this and I have at least one small piece that I want to put into CIR switch next year. I’ve tilled a fire break around it and plan to burn. I’ll use chemicals if be needed too so long as it’s dirt by winter so I can frost seed. That’s my plan.

    Clover

That same scenario has me thinking a lot about converting to grazing alfalfa instead. Maybe grow the clover where there is at least some shade.

Youth hunting? Tactics, what to shoot & anyone going?

I let my daughter decide. I emphasize that it’s her choice. I do recommend that we focus on harvesting mature animals (either sex). I’d be thrilled if she shot a giant. There is a “very curious” lack of 5+ year old deer in my area every year so if we see one, it’s not going to get a pass. This...

Describe your best stand spot !

A farm I bow hunted for many years before it sold. The yellow line is a trail on top of a steep bluff. The top of that bluff is very narrow and drops off precipitously to the north down into a creek. On a south wind, in the rut, bucks will cruise it looking/scent checking the field to the south...

Describe your best stand spot !

Big white oak at the corner of one of our ponds. NW wind puts scent out over the water. My best archery buck was traveling N on the dam, didn’t work out for him. Great spot every year if November is cold.

    November date thoughts??

All other things being equal, in SE Iowa, I would not miss Nov 9-12. After that, it gets slow, fast. If I could only bowhunt one day, it would be Nov 10, no question.
