Buffer Strips - Habitat and Water

An interesting graphic I received in an email today. Water quality is as hot of a topic in this state as the deer population and big bucks are in this forum. There are some connections to the two. This map shows the decrease in CRP buffer strips in the DSM watershed. Almost 11,000 acres lost...

    Xmas came lil early!

What a stud! Congratulations, sounds like you've got a great neighbor too.

    Let’s talk arrows

I'm in the same boat with beast...solid reviews but I don't think I can support. I've been shooting Magnus black hornets for the last 5 years and I've been really happy. They're a little big for a fixed blade but if you can get them tuned right they are killer. Razor sharp out of the box...

    Selling antlers

Chris Dietrich is who I sell mine to. He's in eastern Nebraska but makes runs through Iowa quite often. Kinda like a fur buyer. Best prices anytime I've checked with anyone else and an honest, good guy. Send me a PM if you want his contact info.

What are you willing to give up

Actually given up. If I mow corn it's after season. This year my cells cams are either solely trespasser patrol and/or set to batch send every 24 hours at midnight. I haven't shot a doe in western IA in 5 years.

What are you willing to give up

I think that's the point here. Many of us on here can self regulate and enjoy the challenge. That would be the extreme minority. The majority have AR straight walls with magazines loaded to the gills, ready to fill every tag in their pocket.

What are you willing to give up

-Cell cams. Honestly I miss the days of pulling cards, it was like Christmas morning. I've moved mine to people surveillance more than deer surveillance. If I hear another hunting story on a podcast or FB post with the gist is: "I got a buzz on my phone, checked the app, saw him go into a...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

A lot, especially with low-average habitat. I have permission on a "giant" farm, but 95% of that giant farm is ag. The bow season can be great but there's a group that pushes it every year on 1st season and there's often a trespasser or two during the gun season, and that farm goes completely...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Great response and perspective. The other thing to consider is the other stakeholders in the conversation of populations. Hunters, and only some of us, are the only stakeholder concerned with age structure and big bucks. The other main stakeholders the DNR and legislature have to consider...

    Let’s talk arrows

Great thoughts. With an 80# bow and 30" draw, heavy ish arrow and good FOC, I sure wouldn't be worried about a shoulder either! But I understand the sentiment of aiming off the shoulder. What is your broadhead of choice with that setup and why?

    Shed bucks

I wouldn't say "a ton" but there certainly are shed bucks walking around. I talked with an agent for a big land broker yesterday and he said the same thing, most people he talked to have seen at least one or two now.

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Glad to hear a decent report and optimism from @Hill_billydeluxe . I didn't hunt SW IA near home this year but I did talk to many of my contacts about deer. Mainly farmers, pheasant hunters and longtime gun groups in Harrison, Pott,, Mills, Fremont and some in the next counties east. Still...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Just some anecdotal notes from my season because I think this year really applies to this thread. My wife and I hunt both Iowa and Nebraska every year, either farms we are part owners on or family farms and permission spots. Very similar farms in terms of size, habitat:agriculture, etc. but...

    HELOC for Construction?

Hey all, this isn't exactly farm related but I thought some of the "land wiz kids" with more experience than me on here might have some input. I have the opportunity to buy a small chunk of land off market that has a small shop and small house. The land and shop is exactly what my wife and I are...

Latest from my FSA office as of Dec 1

@Hardwood11 the verbiage is something like "4 out of 6 years" within the years defined in each Farm Bill. I believe we have 8 or 9 years of cropping history now, but because only the first 2 or 3 of those years were the only ones defined in the 2018 FB, we do not qualify until a new FB or...

Latest from my FSA office as of Dec 1

We've been trying to get 15 acres enrolled but it doesn't have the cropping history under the "current" 2018 farm bill...major bummer to continue to see "extensions" instead of an updated FB. Great example of how worthless our gov has become.
