Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

There’s no doubt in my mind one buck results in a better age class. Zero doubt in my mind what so ever. I’ve been to too many areas in Midwest on both sides of the borders to compare states. Now- are there other factors like bait, NR draw, timing of gun season? OF COURSE. Been all over KS…...

Tim Waltz attack on deer farms. Whose farm is next?

Though it’s Tim Walz (the greatest governor of all time!) - I still will listen with an open mind. Before I listen- I don’t have deer pens or anything like that but I sure don’t like the idea of removing ability to have them. I personally don’t buy the CWD argument in the context of how we are...

Managing coyotes, how-to, why, fawn/prey mortality & all the methods

Thought I’d start thread here we could all chime in on. To start, I’m a newer trapper that’s getting this down little by little. I literally learn new things every week. I think I mainly learned making sets from forums & watching YouTube videos & some really good dudes show me how to do it...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

33! ;) & that post is funny. On a serious note- I don’t think is a group that is “just trying to win some stupid argument”. Very much the opposite. I do believe this is 33 pages because guys of all positions are thinking things like this….. things have gone in the wrong direction. What I...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Guys that don’t think 1 buck changed IN or see merits. Any thoughts or does this make you think a bit?

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

I’d take an educated guess that # is doubled when you factor in tag sharing, easily. Here’s one question for those that think population FIXES ALL …. & make no mistake - I do think it fixes a lot. I am concerned it doesn’t fix all for 2 reasons: 1) countless other states that have high...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

All this makes sense & agree. I do think there’s more of a shift across country for age vs score. I’m not saying it’s prevailing or the majority but for sure more dudes know about it, care about it & make decisions on it vs 10-20 years ago. Which I applaud!! Im sure there’s some decent...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

I know folks get fired up on one buck & it’s not the battle we will have right now in our state in reality. It will be getting the population up and then be topics debated based on reality on the ground. I will admit- the resistance towards taking anything away from the hunter in favor of the...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

When we say “xyz hunters shoot 2 or 3 bucks” …. The gun hunting tag sharing doesn’t tell us how many of those bucks would be someone’s 2nd or 3rd buck. They are never counted as a 2nd buck harvested as it’s called it under the tag holders name. Like anything - that alone isn’t a massive deal...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

CORRECTION POST …. I for sure want to get the data right. there’s clearly varying data based on the year and the sites you look at. I did look some of this up to get 2-3 data sources for #’s. Here’s what I found for Indiana. It puts the range between several sources at 45,000-55,000. If...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

I did put the wrong # there 225k is total license. 160k or whatever is the right figure for deer hunters. The hunter density per huntable acre - when I looked at DNR data…. It was the same comparables as any of our neighbors or other states. Other states have same things …. Open areas. CRP...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

BINGO!!!!! 1) everyone join & if able, volunteer to help in “what do you folks need help with?” & that’s very little time in a year to be honest 2) help with getting emails blasted in when it’s time or called for. Using your social media to get word out on regs or any issue with our hunting...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Iowa DNR’s data. We did an economic impact study for the state of iowa a year or 2 ago. Jace Elliot was responsible for that study & he brought that stat to the public’s attention after the study was done. It was a huge eye opener to a lot of folks. “Iowa doesn’t have the hunter density!”...

What are you willing to give up

I’d give up piles of things…. Some are practical, some are fantasy-land stuff…. Some is stuff I currently do and some are things I’d give up that I don’t participate in anyways… 1) Jan 1 season is done 2) thermals during deer season 3) no bait on grounds being hunted during deer season period...
