There was a doe on my place like that when we bought the property in 2019, except hers was a front leg. The previous owner said she showed up in 2017 after a heavy snow and basically spent the rest of the winter in the plowed driveway. She finally disappeared in the spring of 2024. The last...
I'm not willing to give up the ability for my family to shoot 2-3 deer for the freezer. With us not shooting does due to the population 1,2, and 3 year old bucks have been filling the freezer.
My family went into this fall not shooting any does for the 3rd year in a row due to the drop in population. We managed to fill 2 tags. My oldest killed her 3rd deer in 4 years during youth, and I managed to shoot a 3 year old 2nd shotgun in the cold and snow. The brassica plot paid off during...
I think this is my 3rd year with pumpkins too. We finally got enough rain, and I have dozens of pumpkins that we left in the plot. Between the pumpkins and the brassica plot next to it has the most deer in it at my place since the snow.
Hunting with my girls during the youth season. My oldest shot her 3rd deer in 4 years. It was just a 4 point, but she doesn't care. She has 2 more years before she ages out. She has expressed an interest in bow hunting, and we're going to look at bows this week.
I still shoot the 2315 out of a 20+ year old PSE. I've thought a few different times over the years of upgrading, but I'm adverse to change, and if nots broke why fix it.
We bought our place in August and December of 2019, but our history with it started in 2016. A lot of it was luck and good timing.
I worked through college to keep my debt as low as possible while still saving $$ every month. I met my wife while in college, and unfortunately her parent's advice...
How was landowner status proven prior to the new electronic system? I've only owned for 5 years so the new system is all I know.
It seems like there was more potential for abuse prior to the new way, and I wonder if old landowners were just grandfathered in without ever having to prove what...
I don't know what caused it, but we've had a doe around for a few years that only has 1 ear. Looks the same as yours. I'll post a pic of it facing the camera if I can find one.
Still going down in my area. This is the 2nd year I decided not to shoot any does, and I have less does now than 2 years ago. Nothing has changed as far as pressure on neighboring properties. My cams are taking 1/2 the pics they used to. I went multiple days during 2nd season not seeing a deer...
I've used the law firm Moore, McKibben, Goodman, & Lorenzen out of Marshalltown a couple times for FSBO land sales, and was happy with them. They managed to fix a screw up from a different lawyer I had hired 1st.
It's right around 22 acres. We established around 5 acres of a pollinator prairie blend. We also put a couple acres in sunflowers that once the sunflowers get established we let whatever weed/grass come up under them. There's also a couple acres of clover. The rest is timber, and pasture I...
I'm in year 4 of turning a cattle farm into wildlife habitat. Since I put in prairie in 2021 I would see/hear pheasants a handful of times a year. I've been seeing/hearing them everyday for a couple months. The work seems to be paying off.
That was my thinking. I did a research paper in college on CWD, and all the studies I read through the conclusions were inconclusive. The sample sizes are all really small, and depends on post mortem diagnosis. What they do know is there are 2-3 different types of CJD. The 1 they believe is...
I wish he provided the citations for the claims in his article. I'm going to have to go searching for info. about the natural barrier preventing CWD from transmitting deer to man. That's the 1st I've heard anyone claim that.
If this passed my county would drop forest reserve before the ink dried. My 23 acres is all taxed as residential since I took all agriculture off it, and the only thing I plant is for wildlife. The only thing keeping my taxes under $10k a year is 8 acres of forest reserve.
Same thing I've been doing the last 2 months. Sitting in a boot waiting on a torn achilles to heal. It was kind of nice the snow held off this long, I could at least hobble around the driveway. No way I'm doing that now.
