    HF 2657 - special lottery for non-residents

Thanks to all that helped stymie this...for now. If history is a guide, they will be back. Due to "things" I was not able to get to DM today, but I sincerely appreciate the great effort from a variety of people that "get it". Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

    Retrieving game law

I think I would be in this camp too. ^^ While I have not personally experienced a deliberate trespass under the guise of looking for a wounded animal, I do know of several people that have. The main problem is that "people" are involved and there are too many snakes out there that make it...

    Timber guys...?

Nice log, but probably not a big money maker IMO. But at 38' long you would definitely yield a good amount of lumber. I would suspect that a pro would not want to mess with one log...can you buck it into 4 sections and take it somewhere to sell it?

    Not sure if?

I will add...I can see it now...some of the hunting podcasters, etc, will soon learn of this idea, YOUR idea, and then promote it and even take credit for it, etc. About guarantee! :)

    Not sure if?

Very cool...I had never thought of doing this with straw only, but I could definitely see it working. Great thinking. I used to have an old barn on my place that deer, even big bucks, would often bed in. They would always be laying on the old hay FWIW. The more severe the weather, hot or...

    NW iowa proposed regs..

I hear you and mainly agree, but not to nitpick...there is still a difference in my mind here. I agree that a dead buck is a dead buck...but our current technology, season structure and weaponry, etc, facilitates SO MUCH MORE success than back in the day, the odds of any given buck being...

    NW iowa proposed regs..

I get the point you are making, but there are other super key variables to consider too. Pre-glory days we did not have even 1% of the ability we do now to electronically capture information about and surveil our quarry. (Trail cams, cell cams, drones, etc.) Also, weaponry is much more...

Red Flag Warnings last Sat & Sun

My opinion, based on numerous interactions with insurance agents and adjustors in a professional setting...you WANT to provide the numbers and I would start at replacement cost and then work from there if things are older, etc. Don't let some insurance nerd ( Sorry Hardwood :) ) tell you what...

Red Flag Warnings last Sat & Sun

As someone who has done dozens of controlled burns over many years...lighting one up under red flag conditions is negligence. I am sorry to see that damage, but the burner should be liable IMO.

    Switch grass is too thick.

Spit balling here (I haven't dealt with this problem personally)...Could you burn it now? Then spot spray portions of it once it starts growing back to make the stand less "pure" and more diverse? In other words...create "islands" of sorts.

    NW iowa proposed regs..

Yikes!! That sounds pretty depressing. We too had a bad EHD year in 2023, but nothing of note since then, thankfully. I suppose I should be thankful that we "only" lost, I dunno, 30% to 50% of the deer, but just ONCE. I don't want to ignite the whole "one buck limit" thread convo...but when...

    NW iowa proposed regs..

I don't have any insight on NW Iowa as I am far from there. But are they experiencing EHD in multiple years up there? How did the population get so low?

    The guy lost his foot

I once shot a doe with my muzzy after watching it run into the woodlot that I was hunting, along with several other deer. I could tell that it was limping noticeably and I thought someone must have wounded it, so I lined up my longest shot of my life and took it. Bingo! I hit her perfectly, a...

    Current state of farming/ag

Background - While I do own two farms, that is not really my profession, I own a contracting business. Farming is cyclical, yes...and so is contracting...big time. I know multiple farmers that fit the bill of avoiding taxes no matter how much they have to spend to do it, as referenced above...

Anyone using a DR walk behind brush mower for timber management?

It's easy-peasy. I have created fire breaks in the timber with a backpack leaf blower and never come close to losing contain. (I have had some trouble, in the past, out in the CRP/grass, FWIW.) For an even better fire break in the timber...can you drive a mower, even a lawn tractor, through...

Anyone using a DR walk behind brush mower for timber management?

I would look to do a couple of timber burns to control MF and get other benefits too.

You're a good man Curtis...trying to warn all of us about an imposter. There is no dispute...you have the pictures to prove it. :)

Weird antler drop location. Any body have any they want to share

FWIW, I saw something similar on my place way back in the day. I have grain bins that I have sometimes rented out to local farmers and I can tell you that local deer come to know where they can get some "free" corn to eat when it gets really cold. I found a modest single antler in the yard...

Easiest way to open up tree canopy

FYI...if you are near Iowa City...I have a legit sawmill AND a kiln to dry the lumber.
