    Very cool, congrats!!

The start of the rut is upon us.

FWIW, the cool temps sparked the deers at our place yesterday too. My son watched a nice buck yesterday AM jogging around looking rutty. He is a buck on the hit list for us this year, but probably option #3. Between that and the fact that he kept moving so much, my son passed him at 34 yards...

    Buying land in your 20s

Another FWIW...I have had several people say things to me like, "It must be nice..." to have the land that I do. Well, it is nice, yes, and I am very grateful for it. BUT...it is also true that I DIDN'T own a new truck until I was 45 years old, we DIDN'T take expensive vacations, we bought a...

    Buying land in your 20s

Just a comment on the above. I agree. I can't think of a land partnership that stayed together over a stretch of time, perhaps I am forgetting one, or some, though. I CAN think of several that disintegrated over time, and usually not a long time. FWIW.

    What are the deer eating????

My son shot a doe a week ago Sunday evening...he field dressed it in the yard, as we often do, leaving the gut pile behind. One week later the critters had consumed the "goodies", but apparently no squirrels joined the buffet line...as this was what was left a week later. I am hoping...

To find the crazy chicken...duh. :)

High fence opinion in specific example???….

Agreed, ^^ I am certainly not a fencing expert, but my thoughts would be that it would not solve the problem...only move it. Unless there was a viable underpass or overpass, which I believe have been successfully installed in the West to facilitate big game movement across certain highways, I...

Neonicotinoids insecticide & deer health- causing big problems???

Southern Iowa here and I haven't been in the stand yet, but my son shot a "lone doe" Sunday evening. That is a sample size of one, admittedly, but it is something that we have seen much commonly in the recent past.

Neonicotinoids insecticide & deer health- causing big problems???

FWIW, while an over population of raccoons and such can definitely be a detriment to ground nesting birds, I have way fewer nest predators now than I did back in the day when I had scads of turkeys. IMO, SOMETHING else is behind the precipitous drop in turk populations over the years.

    Purple paint law

Iowa does not have a purple paint law, but I think Missouri, along with several other states, does. FWIW, when I worked for Hunter's Specialties years ago, they had a boundary tape product that came in three different colors, per the rules that existed for various states. Purple, red and...

Who’s hiring Superintendents in Des Moines?

I do agree that if the gun charge was truly derived from that ^^ reported interaction, it is bogus. But...I cannot be the least bit certain that this is how things truly went down. I don't have the facts to say one way or the other, but there is enough subterfuge and deception associated with...

    Fall Armyworms

My son was at our farm this weekend and he did not notice anything. (We did get hit hard by them 3 or 4 years ago.) We are in NE Davis County.

    Morton buildings vs. all others

I am not for or against any particular post/frame builder, but I can't imagine that whatever long lasting qualities you desire could not be satisfied via many different builders. I just don't know what would make a Morton building better than anything else assuming that the same level of...

    Real Estate Attorney recommendations

Does your purchase agreement have any language (contingencies) that gives you an out here? Frankly, a well written purchase agreement should have that protective language, IMO. I have dealt with a sticky easement issue within the last 18 months and I can tell you that the numbskull at the...

    Late food plot prep

Another thought...one time, when I had "BIG" weeds and grass that I first mowed, then sprayed and had a really thick mat of dead vegetation I then scraped A LOT of it off the plot with 3 point device that is actually a dethatcher. Actually, I didn't even scrape all of it off of the field due to...

    Late food plot prep

Just to be clear...I have had good success many times with brassicas and some thatch, but with weeds at 8' to 10' tall he is going to have A LOT of thatch. IMO, too much for the circumstances.

    Late food plot prep

With that ^^ description...I am going to say that you will want to burn, or drag off, the chaff. Some thatch is OK for brassicas, but too much though is a formula for uneven germination IMO. Brassicas need/want kind of bare soil in my experience.

    “Once” in a Lifetime

Funny thing...I too had never seen one quite so white in my life...until last night. I saw one outside in my yard at our new house, about 2 miles outside of Iowa City. Broad daylight still, running along the top of the pond dam where I have it mowed. Soooooo...Daver is going to see if...
