    Buying land in your 20s

I haven’t read all these posts yet but what I’ve read has plenty of good information. One thing I didn’t notice is to sit down with your wife and come up with a plan together. Then be ready to work hard.

    The guy lost his foot

We had a doe on our farm missing her left rear foot. She was at least 8 plus the last time we saw her. From what I saw, she kept to herself a little and I never saw her jump the fence on one side of our plot. I had the feeling that she might not be wandering terribly far, but I could be way...

    Crp 2026 Sign up

Not sure if this helps. I had a pollinator field expire after 10 years in September, 2025. Pollinator program wasn’t available anymore and I switched to Quail Habitat. Rates dropped from $207 to about $180 or a little lower.

    Concordia Oaks

I have seen that work quite well and what comes up is usually healthy. Many of the trees I plant and tube that are from nurseries tend to be pretty fragile. A drought is tough on them if you cannot water them.

    Concordia Oaks

I’d love to have some and would gladly send you a check to cover time and expenses, if you’d consider that. I had a couple growing about 15 years ago and they were mowed down. I’m at my farm in southeast Iowa this weekend and enjoying myself. Thank you!

    Future of CRP

I certainly hope so. Hopefully August and September turn out okay.

    Brassicas

Dbltree used to suggest planting brassicas in late July or early August. Of course he watched the weather. I’ve done fine planting the first week or ten days in August. Naturally it helps to avoid 6 weeks without a rain after planting.

    Back in bees?

Beekeeping is the most interesting hobby I’ve ever had. Three things I’ve noticed they love is buckwheat, sorghum, and goldenrod. The sorghum is something you can plant that gives them something they can utilize late in the season. Nectar and pollen are harder to come by late in the growing...

    Bought my first farm!

Congratulations! I’ve been fortunate to receive excellent advice from two very good friends over the 18 years I’ve had some property. I just got lucky stumbling up on 2 people that made their living working with and improving wildlife habitat. Only one is living now and he is an Iowa Private...

Tactics for stopping or nailing poachers….

Anyone have experience with drones to get close to poachers? Seems they could be useful.

Tactics for stopping or nailing poachers….

This is certainty not directed at you, Skip, but just a reminder for folks to develop a good relationship with your wardens and the DNR, preferably before you need their assistance!

    Self Directed IRAs

There’s a wide range of charges for those management fees, so don’t overpay.

    Year around food

Your attached MSU link “”Role at the top of your post is excellent. I’m quite familiar with 2 of the 3 zones discussed. Their studies are well done and maybe a bit eye opening. Also mentioned in this thread talks a little about use cool season plots and not so much use of warm season plots...
