    Yearly food plot maintenance

I was thinking of this the other day while getting a depleted acre, food plot ready. Once you get your soil dialed in, what fertilizers are needed for yearly upkeep? I know brassicas love Nitrogen, clover..p&K but if you are just keeping up with yearly growth and wildlife consumption, what would...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Look at it as a bridge to shed season.

    Maybe it's just the picture

There is definitely some mange down there. I think I just need to get a little closer and find out :D

    Maybe it's just the picture

It almost looks like this coyote has wire or a snare constricting him mid section? Maybe grazed?

    Compartmentalizing Food Plots

Every plot is different and if I felt it would be to my advantage I'd do it. FYI...there is another post asking the same thing. Debate: One Big Plot OR Screening to break plot up into Smaller segments

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

With the exception to our regs, these examples are the reason why Whitetail thrive in Iowa. I wouldn't trade our percent of timber for nothing or at least not in good deer country.

Debate: One Big Plot OR Screening to break plot up into Smaller segments

Some after pics for sure. A few more questions...are you planning on dropping the majority of the edge trees into the switch and how far beyond the original edge are you feathering? Are you hinge cutting any or dropping them completely?

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

In the ideal world, we raise the population and call it good. That for the most part would solve alot of our problems. If that's not a possibility, then you start looking at one buck or all the cumulative issues like Cell cams. EHD is a huge problem that hopefully gets minimized with time.

Debate: One Big Plot OR Screening to break plot up into Smaller segments

I like smaller plots spread out to lessen the pressure on the deer and to keep the bucks moving during the season. All have some screening or that's the goal. An acre plot would be considered a large plot for me and if I thought it would benefit me to break it up with screening I would. The...

Debate: One Big Plot OR Screening to break plot up into Smaller segments

That's a nice plot Bassattackr. Are you dropping the edge trees into the switch or back into the timber? I ask because I'm planning on doing something similar.

    Alfalfa foodplot

Skip...are you saying to fertilize, lime and disc right now? pH of 5.7 with a buffer of 6.6. VL on P and low on K. Probably not even a possibility in the spring, fall might even be a stretch. I would definitely get a jump on it right now if I can and do another sample in the fall. I'd guess a...

    Alfalfa foodplot

I'm planning on putting an alfalfa plot in this spring. Soil sample on its way and silt loam and loam soils. I killed it twice and plan on spraying again before planting. I can't remember there ever being crop in this area in over 20 years. I'm sure I'll need to add lime and I'm planning on...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

If we could ever get beyond the EHD hump, most of the population issue would, to some degree, resolve itself. It would also help with the mature buck situation. A temporary law with an end date aimed at population recovery might be an easier sell than a permanent change. A two year one buck...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Agreed. I seriously doubt you can kill your way to better genetics. You can remove an aggressive buck and you can kill a buck with lesser traits that is a heavy browsing corn eating empty space, both a positive for the surviving deer, but you can't control the genetics. JMO

Silver and gold - physical, or mining stocks?

Sounds like you need to get back to the basics. You don't need an alternate investment, you just need a well diversified plan based on your age. Keep it simple and dollar cost average. Don't let another decade pass you by and don't buy gold at $4000. THIS^^^

Got to get this out There

As long as you are with him, he'll be ok. Use it as a teaching moment. I never let my kids do anything by themselves and that was 20 years ago...not even church camps. One knuckle head can mentally screw up your kid for life. They don't have to look the part either, one of the normal looking...
