    Breaking up a food plot

A few thoughts.. I like an edge or a pinch where my stands are that would funnel traffic, maybe plant accordingly. I think the beans, greens is a good strategy but that doesn’t leave you with many beans. Less than 1.5 acres? Most areas that wouldn’t last long. Could keep entire plot in...

    Breaking up a food plot

Would be helpful to know where your stands, access routes are. Also bow vs gun?

    Switch grass is too thick.

Burn it as soon as you can. Then go back and disc it. Will set it back some. Bonus, you'll get a flush of native forbs as well..

Learned something about soil PH today

He would or would not add lime? Buffer pH is high compared to your tested pH, which tells me you have lower buffering capacity - IE: Adding lime will move the needle. Conversely, if your buffer pH is close to your tested pH (high buffering capacity), it would take a lot more lime to adjust...

    Diversity Pockets

If you don't do weed control with your switchgrass, you will naturally have pockets. Pockets of what's in the native seed bank, even better.. My personal preference. What I've found is these new RC varieties can keep up well with a lot of weed pressure, especially when summer planted...

    The guy lost his foot

Had a buck with a broken hip, believe he got hit by a car as a 2 year old. Grew a funky rack at age 3 and my neighbor finally shot him. He would come to his alfalfa field daily. I'd fold like a cheap suit if anything like that ever happened to me :)

Edge Feathering / Switchgrass Field Buffer Project - In Photos

RE: Bedding - Historically they bed on the hillside below. They could start to bed tighter, right up against this edge by next season. The growth of this edge will explode, along with the existing 3 year (20 yard wide) switchgrass buffer above it on the field edge. This makes my access even...

Edge Feathering / Switchgrass Field Buffer Project - In Photos

March 14, 2026 After a good workout all marked trees are down. Quite a bit of cover here. Didn't know we had some nice hardwoods in amongst all those giant cedars.. May go back next winter and fell a few more cedars a bit further in, as time allows. Even with morning sun, there are...

    Liming question

For pell lime - Old rule of thumb used to be 100# / acre to raise pH by .1 point. 500# should get you around 6.2 or so, depending on soil type.

    Liming question

How big is the field? Would be nice to get an Ag lime truck in there. If not, pelletized is next best option.

Best place to find untreated wood posts?

Looking to use something besides T post + scrapestick. Big bucks tear out limb every time.. Going to foam in an untreaded post and drill holes for branches. Prefer pine or cedar. My fallback is to make one with the tons of cedars I have..

    Who has the best switchgrass?

Been pretty happy with Real World to be honest. I know its supposedly just Alamo, but the winter standability (even with snow) is pretty dang good. The new improved RC varieties are quick out of the ground and unless you want a monoculture, don't require weed control when late spring /...
