    In season deer feeding

The wardens say you actually have to catch them hunting over it or it fails in court. The 200 yard rule is where the cheaters get away with it. Banning it altogether would eliminate the gray area.

    In season deer feeding

Absolutely…Huge loophole and guys abuse it. It’s very difficult to bust guys baiting during the season and hunting near it.

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Isn’t this the first year for rifles and crossbows during archery in Indiana? I’m not sure when they starting allowing rifles.

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

Don’t forget Iowa has over a month of basically rifle season. With the straight wall cartridge and long range muzzle loaders it’s like using a standard rifle for a month. In the not to distant past, it was shotguns with about a 100 yard range and muzzle loaders with about the same. Huge...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

I think a lot of bucks were getting shot by nonresident party hunting..They were mostly hunting their own farm or another managed farm. Shooting a 3-4 year old buck late season (gun) over a corn or bean plot is about as easy as it gets. Unfortunately, I think that is when a lot of damage is done...

What are you NOT willing to give up? List 1 thing

For me it’s bow hunting in January. My favorite time of year to hunt except maybe this year with the warm weather.

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

I think eventually Iowa will ban them on public, but as much as we’d like, it will never happen on private..Too many legal issues with doing that on private.

What are you willing to give up

Anything that makes hunting harder and not easier I’m all in..

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

I think everyone can agree giant mature bucks are becoming more and more rare. So what is the only real way to improve age structure……The only way is to make hunting harder and not any easier. In Iowa we can leave all the seasons the same but tweak a few things. Stop party hunting for residents...

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

I watched some Iowa deer drive videos on YouTube, and it was a free for all. It seemed like the goal was just to hit a deer and then worry about trying to kill it after that. People taking wild, unethical shots. I know not all hunters do this, but it sure seems a lot do. Agree on party hunting...

    Price to pay for land

If the 10 acre piece has an agent selling it, get a buyer's agent and they can tell you exactly what it is worth. If it's a sale without agents look at comps thru websites like landwatch to see what's for sale and what's sold in that area recently. You can find out what a parcel sold for (tax...

    Early rut

I’ve always been one to say the rut is the same time every year with no variance. But this year I think it was truly about a week early. Most of the 3+ year old bucks on my farms were locked down around November 2nd. Anyone else see the same thing, and the real question is why? I personally...

    Shed bucks

I had a couple of bucks shed the first week of December..It’s not normal, I wonder what the heck is going on. Obviously stressed for some reason.

    Taking bets

I have a farm in Ringgold co and a big parcel I lease there. Both have surprisingly low deer numbers. I’d think harvest totals would be down statewide this year.

Giant Deer of Iowa are rapidly becoming a past memory

I’ve been dealing with the same thing for years now, and I don’t see anything changing in the future. Now you have to get into the counties with less hunting pressure and find a large farm to lease or buy. That’s the only real solution.. Killing the bucks is easy today with the technology but...

    Missouri cancels late season

Now we just need Iowa to stop the late shed antler season that runs January 11th thru the 26th.

    List is getting shorter

I agree about using fences or other means to funnel deer by your stand..It becomes more killing than hunting when you get to that point. There has to be some challenge left than to manipulate movement and force deer unnaturally right by your stand. A lot of serious hunters do it though.

    Orange Army

I think during the rut is one of the hardest times to kill a mature buck. No pattern and they are always locked down with a doe. Lots of deer get killed during the rut because that's when all the hunters are out. Personally, I'd pick almost anytime except the rut to take a mature buck.

    Orange Army

I agree about the snow and trespassers. Also, I hunted a food plot one eve looking for an old cull I wanted to shoot. He didn't show but almost all the great young 3-4 year olds did show. I was thinking this is way too easy, and it's no wonder we don't have many old, high scoring bucks around...

    Orange Army

I drove by Casey’s in Mount Ayr Saturday morning before daylight and it looked like an Army getting ready for battle.
