Tell me why we should shoot more does

I think hunters have to take the bull by the horn here and use their own personal judgement. Each farm is different , but it blows my mind to see people talking as if Iowa’s deer herd is anywhere close to what it was 10 years ago. Outside a few “refuges” I would venture to say every county in...

    Consecutive brassica

Agreed, I’ve planted turnips on turnips on the turnips for 6-7-8 years in the same plots; have had zero issues with growth. Because Owen shoots big bucks that makes him an agronomist. Be curious to know why he says you can’t plant turnips multiple years and have success………

20 Years of Non Resident Hunting Iowa, My 5th Tag This Year, I'm Psyched!

I don’t think it necessarily discriminated based on dry or wet, but I do know that majority of the farm ponds in my area have water as well as the major creeks and streams. We are slowly slipping into the dry period, however it’s August in Iowa; that is to be expected. I have no idea what the...

20 Years of Non Resident Hunting Iowa, My 5th Tag This Year, I'm Psyched!

In the area you’re hunting, 2018-2019 EHD was devastating. We’ve been in a pretty severe drought for the last 2-3 years on top of this. This has been a pretty excellent year for growing deer as well as below normal heat. Overall I can’t remember a spring/summer combination like we’ve had in...

20 Years of Non Resident Hunting Iowa, My 5th Tag This Year, I'm Psyched!

You’ve picked a great year to come. The wet summer we’ve had should keep EHD away for the most part, as well as the deer making some fantastic jumps in the antler department. Great area your hunting and should be a some fun times.

    Brassicas

Agreed. We’ve got plenty of time. I planted Sept 15th last year and had turnips the size of baseballs throughout the entire 1.5acre plot. Our southern iowa sub soil moisture is slowly depleting as we’ve missed a ton of these pop up storms last 10 days. I’ve been burned so many times in the...

Warning to the dads of young girls...

You nailed it. I’ve got a 7 and 1 year old, both girls. Never saw myself growing up as much of a girl dad. Now, I wouldn’t change it for the world. Watched my 7 year old shoot her first Tom this spring and hopefully her first deer this fall. My youngest seems to love her dad time too, so I...

    clethodim

I would mow then spray a couple days after mowing event. IMO guys go wrong when they spray then mow, you’re just setting yourself up for another spray event if the chemical hasn’t completely killed the plant your mowing. Mowing will just regenerate the growth process.

Spray when grass is small, 3-4” or less if possible. Don’t forget the crop oil. Really really helps make sure you’ve got adequate coverage over the surface area of the plants you’re trying to kill. Plus the crop oil will slow the drying time down thus allowing the plant to update more of the...

    Land prices / insane!!!

It’s very simple, businesses received that money to pay their employees salaries. Majority of these “big” paid businesses didn’t miss a beat during COVID. So they merely did what they were told by their accountant; pay your employees with this money. Take the money you would have done your...

Looking for some southern Iowa spring turkey hunting information

You’ve hunted turkeys for 2 seasons on oh public and you want to argue. Got it! Best of luck this season.

Looking for some southern Iowa spring turkey hunting information

You must not live down here. With OnX, Facebook, Instagram, etc etc. These places have people on them every single day of season. The days of hunting during the week and not seeing people have vanished since Covid. Not trying to sound sour but it’s the truth. You’re going to see guys hunting...

    Circle of life

Yep, myself as well as most of the buddies I talk hunting with are no longer shooting mature does. If a guy wants some meat, it’s a yearling or doe without a fawn (when able) Our deer numbers won’t get back to what they once were without guys doing it themselves on their terms. Seems the...

    Circle of life

Yep, On the farms I hunt, we have it every single year. Some years worse than others. IMO, if the cows are there then the disease is there. I feel like after you get hit hard, the deer than make it through that first wave may have antibodies that allow them to not become infected and or...

    Circle of life

We still haven’t come close to recovering in southern Warren, northern Clarke from the 2019 outbreak. Farms holding 3-4 mature deer are lucky to have one. Seems like areas recover when everyone is on the same page. But when half your deer die and people own land to hunt deer, seems they don’t...

    Snow Geese

I’m with you on the 3.5 BB. I’d shoot 4” if they made em. If they’re close, they’re done, if they hang up, you’ve got a chance. Been a strange strange February. Never seen temps like this, this early. No snow line, no frost in the ground, open water in South Dakota. Going to happen quick...

Honest concern with Youth Hunter bucks shot…

Welcome to the world of social media and having to prove to everyone how big of stick you swing. Theres absolutely zero reason a child who can’t even hold his ***** when he goes to the bathroom should be killing a deer of that caliber. Dad has ego issues or he hates his neighbors.
