That's why I always wear hearing protection (ear muffs) while mowing. Then I never hear any problems, everything runs longer that way. ;) :)

In my experience, damage "high" on the plant (silk/tassel) is deer. Stalks knocked over, etc, is coon.

:oops: Yikes! Please tell me the whole field wasn't this bad! If you are just losing the first, say, 50' to 100', of a 60 acre field that is one thing. If you are seeing this amount of damage over a wide area of that field, then it is time for some serious doe patrol. :D

How big is the plot? The pic may be misleading, but it doesn't like it is very large. Deer can absolutely do that type of damage and in a small plot, it only takes a couple of "trained" deer to hit those plants every day and pretty soon all you have is stalks. (Don't ask me how I know. :) )...

Weird year so far for me...at my farm in SE Iowa, which is OFTEN dry, we have been getting a fair amount of rain so far this year. We had a relatively dry May, but not terrible, and then we have picked up some nice rains since then. So, all in all, good at this time. Meanwhile, 75 miles north...

Nice. Yeah, we used to have "some" greys here in Iowa too, but they are rarely seen these days. I did have one on trail cam several times, as did at least one of my neighbors, about 5 to 7 years ago now. I never did see it live, nor did I ever get any info on if someone around me caught it...

I too shot many a deer with aluminum arrows and I still like the "feel", but I also don't miss the constant bending, however slight, of the shafts. Even a miss into hard dirt was enough to sometimes tweak an arrow, etc.

If I am understanding your situation correctly...you could either leave it and let the WW die off and fade away OR mow it high now, knocking down the WW and releasing the clover below. That WW will not be 3 or 4 foot tall this fall, you may be able to see some stalks/stems, but it will die back.

Hmmm...I was planning on drilling some new switch here soon with my PH drill. The shallowest depth setting is 1/2", how do you achieve 1/4", max, depth? I could monkey around with the draft, but feel like that would be highly variable in "real field" planting conditions.
