Switchgrass

I bought a switch grass blend (shelter, caven rock and blackwell) from ernst seed company a few weeks ago. Rented the drill today from the local soil and water. They did not offer much advise on setting up the drill. I bought seeds to plant 3 acres @ 6 lbs. an acre. Anyone have a suggestion on...

    Tree Planting

I collected some Chinese Chestnuts last year and they are starting to grow. A few of them have started growing with multiple stems. Should I prune the stickers to help keep the energy into growing the main plant or just let them go? Example pic below:

    Help for dbltree...

Just logged onto IW after a long absence with intent to research what Dbltree would have to say about Black Honey Locust trees in whitetail habitat..... I'm shocked! I sit here with a lump in my throat, tears in my eyes and struggle to find the words. My thoughts and prayer to an amazing man and...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Whats the goal or desired height for the above grain mix to reach before frost? My mix is already 3-4 inches tall!! I thought the deer would keep it mowed down.

    muley hunt

I hunted mule deer in Nebraska in 2011 and South Dakota in 2012. I hunted basically the same area, being right on the border both times. In Nebraska I hunted the Crawford, Hatcreek and Montrose area. Then in South Dakota the Hatcreek, Provo area. Great opportunity in both states and more public...

Hit List numer 1 and 2

With velvet season coming to an end I think I have a pretty good idea who I'll be hunting this fall. I have two bucks, both on the same farm, (how convenient) that I will probably spend most of the season hunting. The second buck I have some history with, he could probably use another year of...

Looks great NWBuck, I was thinking i would get a new seeder before next year. Does that seeder handle fine seed like clover?

    Brassicas

Seeded 7/28/13. As for soil prep.....I two bottom plowed and disked about a week before that, Then on 7/28/13 I added lime and fertilizer....disked it again, rolled it with a roller, seeded and rolled it a second time.

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

I sprayed 4 plot areas today with Buccaneer. One of the spots is any alley way around the perimeter crop field that will connect two of my Brassica plots. I had to do some chainsaw work first but am excited to get this "death row" going. I'm going to buy seed Monday or Tuesday and plant next...

    Brassicas

Just got home from vacation today and took a look at my plots. It appears the beg seeder was only broadcasting out of one side of the spreader. I have a lot of bare spots and am pretty disappointed. I spot re-seeded today ,by hand, over the bare spots with purple top and rape seed. Hope it takes...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

I'm sorry but I guess I'm a little slower than most, so can you explain this in a little more detail? I only have about 1 1/2 acres to plant and would hate to buy the amounts suggested. Also, at what # per acre do you seed the grain mix? Cereal Grain combo in 45% of plot...we use 50# each rye...

Recreational Farm vs Big Buck Sanctuary?

I would like to thank everyone for the responses thus far. I agree with much of what everyone has said. We do enjoy the property, was just looking for ideas like ease feathering and field screening, like I received in a PM. Also I am concurring starting a supplemental feeding program this year...
