    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Cool. We spread it and then cultipacked it, so there's not a lot of seed just laying on top of the soil.

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

How long will the winter rye & clover lay in the ground and be OK? I planted my rye about 2 weeks ago and it hasn't rained a drop. Seeds haven't germinated (obviously). Will they just lie there until it rains and then come up, or have I wasted a ton of seed? Thanks! Steve

    Brassicas

Will do. Do you consider the plot that I posted pictures of "established"? I don't know what the criteria for that would be.

    Brassicas

Here are a few pics of my brassicas so far. Spotty germination, but where they came up they're looking good. (Although with no rain in the forecast that may be about to change...). All the rain we got here in Missouri missed the property by about 20 to 40 miles. Could have used one of those...

    Brassicas

So would it be smart of me to fill in the spots with something else? The pic is deceiving, there are a few large bare areas. I just planted 3 other acres to winter rye / clover. Is there anything you'd recommend for putting in the areas that didn't do so well? I'd be interested on doing...

    Brassicas

I went and checked on my Turnip, GHR, Rape mix yesterday and I have a question. The field looks "spotty"....some areas look great, with green tops and the ground already covered, yet some areas are still bare. The parts that have come up to be honest with you I'm surprised they look as good as...

    Brassicas

dbltree, is it best to just make one pass with a cultipacker, or should i be "crisscrossing" the plot with it, running over the same sections several times. I noticed that most plants are coming up in the "depressions" or grooves created by the cultipacker, and I wonder if I'd have had even...

    Brassicas

Stupid question... but this is the first time I've planted these... can you identify which is which from the pictures. I planted Groundhog Radishes, Purple Top Turnips and Dwarf Essex Rape. Thanks!

Do you think that spreader would work for spreading lime as well? Steve

    Brassicas

Dbltree, Is that a "Fimco" spreader? Do you have a spreader that you recommend or like? I'm looking to get something that I can use behind my 4-wheeler. Thx. Steve

    Brassicas

Planted this weekend. Some pics from yesterday's brassica planting. This is a first time plot on ground that we bulldozed late last year. Trying to get it in shape for some plots. It's come a long way in 6 months. After running a harrow over it to break up the soil, and work the fertilizer in...

    Brassicas

Planted my brassicas this morning and it was starting to rain just as I was finishing up. Dried out for the afternoon, and then started raining again as I was leaving. Hoping to get a good plot. We'll see how it goes.

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Dbltree, So if spraying or mowing the Winter Rye wasn't an option, I can simply run the culipacker over it and that will basically kill it? Will that hurt the clover? Is about now the time to do that? Thanks. Steve

    Clover

In other words... if you had 2 separate plots that you were going to plant, would you keep the rye and the clover separated, or would you plant both to a rye / clover mix? And is it correct that the best time to plant that would be around the end of August? Thanks! Steve

    Clover

Clover Rye question. With all the talk of planting clover with rye, I'm getting confused. I'm planning on putting in a new (clear ground now - bare dirt) clover plot. It sounds like everyone is recommending MIXING in winter rye, is that correct? If so at what rate would I mix the 2 per acre...

    Brassicas

Dbltree, I'm getting ready (probably last week of July) to plant brassicas into a newly dozed field. Lime has been applied, and I will have P&K numbers based off of my soil test. Is 200# per acre of urea a good number to go with at initial planting?
