Support wildlife, habitat and the DNR

First I must address the post from ODOC. I realize we are each entitled to an opinion, and the right to express it. That being said, I can only say there are several non-residents who frequent this site, and the state of Iowa and appreciate the habitat and quality of the deer herd. Secondly...

    Antelope hunt?

Kelcher, if you are still looking for the name of a Wyoming landowner, email me at [email protected]. I hunted on land near Sheridan in the northeast part of the state, just south of I-90. He charged a trespass fee and was a heck of a nice fellow. (We killed some nice goats, too!) MO

    This years cool Hunt

Hey folks, I enjoyed reading the stories. One thing that stood out is the fact each mentioned how much fun the hunts were. Most ended without a deer even being taken. One of my favorite outings this past year was the opening weekend of Iowa's first shotgun season. I didn't even draw a tag...

    SW Iowa 35pt Buck

Good observation, full-strut. That is indeed the upper portion of a Missouri license you see on the truck in the background. This is the buck killed in Saline County, Missouri, which is in the central portion of the state, just north of Interstate 70. Wow, what a Show-Me-State buck!

    Jeep Petition (Online)

I was #9976 on 01-14 at about 1538 hours. Bad move, Jeep. Some deer hunters DO pay attention to things like advertisements. Hope they get the hint... MO

    muzzle loader question

Guys, thanks again for the imput. I'll be buying a bottle of that #13 bore cleaner. Another reason I like this site, collectively, there's a lot of folks with knowlege and experience on this kinda stuff!

    Food Plots

Thanks for the good imput to Trper on this matter. If I get lucky in '02 and draw a tag, I just might get to hunt somewhere near this food plot! Oh, and Trper, I figure they'll be gobbling and strutting in about another 3 1/2 months, so plan on making another trip south. Merry Christmas to...

    muzzle loader question

Hey folks, thanks for the imput. I must confess I started with a clean gun and failed to clean the barrel after a few shots. Sounds like a lot of emphasis is placed on running a clean patch through the barrel, in an attempt to reduce some of the build-up of burned powder. One more question...

    muzzle loader question

Hey folks, I've got a question about shooting a tighter group at 100 yards with an in-line smokepole. I'm shooting a TC stainless Black Diamond, .50 caliber, with a World Class 3x9 Tasco scope. 90 grains of loose Pyrodex and 240 grain sabot bullets. Not a top of the line set-up, but not an...

    Iowawhitetail Poll *****READ THIS*****

I know it's all in fun, and I really don't care what's printed under my username. I just enjoy the site and like to check in once in a while. Merry Chistmas to you all. MO

    Winter and Spring Scouting

Baker, sounds like you've got some pretty good ideas on how to get started. In late summer, mid-July or later, I like to take the binoculars and go for a drive around areas I have permission to hunt. In late afternoons, when the deer come out to feed, you can sometimes catch a group of bucks...

    does with antlers

In Novemeber of 1981, at the ripe old age of 16, I killed my second deer on the opening day of Missouri's rifle season. It had a four point rack, still in velvet. My dad and I got a HUGE suprise as we rolled this critter over to start the field dressing chores. The deer was a doe, with the...

    2002 Non-Resident archery

According to the Iowa DNR website, they proposed an increase in fees: for '02, a non-resident deer tag (antlered or either sex) is $220 PLUS $80 for a non-resident hunting license and $8 habitat fee. Antlerless only are $150 PLUS the $80 and $8. It also appears they increased the number of...

    Deer Tags

Just $.02 from Missouri...We have check stations in our state, requiring you to take your deer or turkey there to have the harvest recorded. This does two things, first, it helps in the management aspect, keeping a pretty accurate count of harvested game. The second reason is for law...

An open letter from an NR....long..

Arkmo, I too have been afforded some pretty good hospitality in southern Iowa. I drew a non-res late season blackpowder tag last year and didn't pop a cap due to not seeing the one I waited 3 years for. This year I didn't draw a bow tag and still went up for the opening weekend of shotgun...
