Central, good job you did it the right way hope you get a good stand. You might want to dust off the .22 cuz you just created a huge squirrel bait pile LOL. IMHO direct seeding is the way to go for trees if your planting a large area. Another thing you could still do for more diversity is spread...
AJ, I think thats the best you can do with whites. Another thing I forgot to mention is the duds or non viable seeds usually drop first so you might want to collect some more in a week or so if theyre still dropping and try again just in case. Maybe you already know this but you can check the...
We direct seeded 24.7 acre about 6 years ago. We planted Burr White and red oak I had Duane Oaks from Oaks Forrestry do the seeding, he recommended fall planting and was very particular about seed storage. He also said he has the worst luck with the white oaks. I collected all the Burr oak...
I would mow, just try to keep the weeds from heading out. Maybe stop the mowing in july to let the grass grow then you should have some fuel for a burn next spring.
Yeah that looks like sweet clover, and yes BF trefoil is invasive I've been fighting it in my CRP for the last 5 years. Ive seen BF in some plot mixes but haven't really seen the deer on my place keying in on it.
I use 2 parts Dicall and 1 part trace mineral salt. Mix that up dump in shallow pit then sprinkle some NATURAL Arm n Hammer Baking Wash over the top. Again make sure it is the A + H Natural baking soda wash. If I remember right the baking wash is the same thing as deer cain, look at the...
Im in SE Mn, one spring planted just the plain purple top and barkant field variety turnips. They did great but the deer did'nt touch them until late January and pounded the plot until all the turnip bulbs were gone then moved on. For weed control I mowed with my tractor, even though I drove...
You could put some roundup in with the 24d if your spraying early. Since roundup will only kill whats green you might be able to kill the clover before the natives germinate.
Have you looked into direct seeding of trees? We planted 25 acres 4 years ago and it is awesome. Ive got 6ft red oaks 10ft cherrys 10ft ash 8-10 ft walnut its all I hoped for. Initially its more expensive but in the long run you save money. We also planted native grasses the same year as the...
Anyone ever put out hay for deer during the winter? I put out a 1/4 bale yesterday for the deer just to see if they would eat it. It's horse hay mainly grasses with some clover and alfalfa. My food plots [corn and beans] are pretty well gone so thought I would try the hay. I'm gonna pick up some...
