    Changing landscape next year

[ QUOTE ] Switchgrass is a native prairie plant, it is not an exotic. [/ QUOTE ] Some varieties of switchgrass are native prairie plants but a bio-engineered variety of switch that grows twelve feet tall does not naturally exist in Iowa. There are many native varieties of fescue in Iowa...

    Changing landscape next year

[ QUOTE ] ... just think of the bio-engineering that will be going on if the switch grass angle comes through. We might be able to take advantage of that, imagine 12' tall switch grass varieties! [/ QUOTE ] It would likely be great for hiding deer but I would be very apprehensive about...

    Looking for a trade

[ QUOTE ] Good luck finding one. I tried this a couple years ago on a few different sites and was crucified over how hard it was to get a deer tag in IA. I found it easier to save the money and just do it. ... [/ QUOTE ] At least in Idaho and Montana, they have changed the regs in the last...

    Changing landscape next year

[ QUOTE ] I am worried in my area more corn will mean less deer movement and sightings until harvest nears completion. May change how I hunt, may make putting in plots a little more worthwhile to draw them in. Any thoughts? [/ QUOTE ] I think the bigger issue of concern is the long term...

    No clue what to do

On small plots I like to drill 50# winter wheat/50# rye/40# Austrian winter peas per acre. This will make a great hunting plot in the fall that can stand heavy grazing pressure and an early green up plot in the spring when deer really need it. If you let the plot mature, you can usually disk...

    NWSG in winter wheat

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] wait an plant the soybeans late after the wheat has nearly matured and from what I've seen at Rob and Jasons place...it works great! [/ QUOTE ] That sounds like a plan right there!! [/ QUOTE ] Actually we no-tilled the soybeans into the growing wheat and rye...

Google Earth for QDM and Game management

With the extra $20, it enables you to accurately calculate acres?

    Timber value?

I would second the Geode Forestry suggestion. I have worked with Bob Petrzelka on several projects over the last 7 years and I don't believe you will find a better consulting forester. He is very knowledgeable, honest, and would be my first choice if I was considering selling timber off my farm.

    Timber value?

The price varies quite a lot depending on the height, form, and quality of the tree ... 18" to 24" , $40 to $100 per tree if it is just oak sawlog, considerably more if it is veneer quality. Do yourself a favor and hire a consulting forester, most of them charge 10% to get bids for your wood...

    Pheasant/Turkey numbers

"I'll be out discing the centers of some brome CRP fields this spring, too." Try discing along the field edges and you will have better success if your goal is to improve bird habitat. Connecting habitat types is more effective ... leaving a thick stand of sod between the timber edge and...

    Pheasant/Turkey numbers

[ QUOTE ] The one problem for me to think about is that the habitat is good on our farm and it hasn't really changed in the last 10 years of declining pheasant numbers. [/ QUOTE ] This statement is incredibly common among landowners and I have always been able to prove this statement...

    How bad?

[ QUOTE ] would be nice to clean up all the unwanted under brush and start over. [/ QUOTE ] If you want to kill the underbrush, burn it after it has leafed out. If you just want to burn what is there off so the brush sprouts new growth, burn the area before the brush breaks buds. From my...

    Switchgrass question

[ QUOTE ] My brome has choked out most of my switch in my CRP. Every year there is less and less. Just a patch here and there. I did a burn to see if it would "re-generate" the switch but it didn't help much. [/ QUOTE ] like Dbltree pointed out ... I would bet you burned in March or April...

    Outfitter trouble

Hunting outfitters do not have to be license in the state of Iowa yet ... and I am not sure we want them to be. Perhaps the state could regulate their activities better if licensed but then they would likely develop an outfitters and guides association, have a much stronger political voice, and...

    Invasives, good or bad

Mutiflora Rose ... it is very easy to control with timely prescribed fire and it is only moderately shade tolerant so it doesn't commonly invade thick timber. I feel it is a good invasive to have on a property, it's a good food source and great bedding habitat, but from what I am seeing I fear...

    Deer Harvest Report ???

I like the call in system better than what we had but I also wonder how many people shot deer that did not call them in. The random, voluntary card reporting system might actually have provided more statistically accurate harvest data if it is simply assumed that all deer that were shot this...

    Drilling on frozen ground

Good point Paul ... if the switchgrass seed hasn't been stratified there won't be alot of germination that first year if it is broadcast after the freeze/thaw action.

    Drilling on frozen ground

[ QUOTE ] Maybe Ill just put the custom drill charge toward a good atv mounted spreader. I'll be doing about 20 acres so it might take awhile with a bag spreader. Then have to come back with atrazine and roundup when the brome starts to green up good, since I didn't follow proper procedure...
