Big Buck of East Sioux Falls

Wet springs can make a big difference in drier climates like the Dakotas, the West, and Texas. Makes for a quicker green-up and better forage at a time when deer are stressed. If a buck is getting plenty of good nutrition, he can spare more energy for growing antlers. Wow. That thing is...

Christmas foiled by another hunter, dang it

Great story! Loved the "bonus" appearances of the turks and rooster. When I take my twins (boy and girl) out in the Double Bull, I sit there just praying for ANYTHING (sparrow, woodchuck, even the idiot-neighbor-who-runs-his-ATV-all-over-heck) to show up! They can sit there for five hours...

iowa DNR wants to raise hunting/fishing fees......

Re: iowa DNR wants to raise hunting/fishing fees.. I'm as low- to middle-income as they come. I also have my share of beefs with the DNR. But I have supported every license fee increase they've proposed. If it helps them do their jobs better, more power to 'em. Here in MN, my archery license...

How big is this deer? (Still on the hoof) W/ Scale

I'd agree; 3-1/2 on the buck. No idea of the age on the feeder.... In my pretty limited experience, the feeders do mess with deer patterns. I hunt western KS (when I can draw a tag) and like to hunt little creek bottoms way out on the prairies. Couple years ago, another guy (local)got...

    Choosing our words carefully

I appreciate this post. Sure, every year there are true stories of hunters poaching buck, shooting behind fences, behaving badly, photo-shopping antlers, etc. We all cringe when we read them. But the vast majority of big bucks taken each year are shot by moral, ethical and law-abiding hunters...

    Identity Crisis

Sorry, I forgot to note that the date was wrong on the first pic. It was taken this fall (October) guess my buddy didn't program it correctly. I figured it was two different deer, but the long brows had a couple guys confused. Both are still alive, we think. Living (mostly) on a 30-acre piece...

    Identity Crisis

Well a couple buddies and I are having a friendly discussion over the identity of the two bucks in the cam-pics below. Both were shot in the last few months. Some feel these are two different deer, some feel its the same buck. So I figured the guys at IW could solve it for us. Whattya think...

Anybody clear cut areas of mature cedars?

Here in se MN, the DNR actually started some habitat work where they clearcut red cedars growing on south-facing slopes. They did the clear-cutting in winter, then burned the cuts in spring. After the burn, they'd seed native grasses into the openings. This was to re-create grassy openings...

    Heater Body Suit

Well I got a HBS from Santa last year and never used it....so this thread inspired me last night. Toted my HBS out with me and set up my snow camo ground blind (another awesome tool for late-season hunting, by the way). So the snow was sideways and it was plenty cold...and I was warm as two...
