I can say with confidence that no, it's not legal for you to shoot a deer BEFORE you buy your tag.
I really don't care either way, I was just wondering if a website full of knowledgable Iowa deer hunters could say FOR SURE if this was illegal or legal. I consider myself an avid hunter and I...
I get where you guys are coming from on the ethics side... I was curious how everyone felt about it. I know how I feel.
Some would argue that if it's not illegal, then is it unethical?
Somebody just show me where it says that this scenario is illegal, then I will shut my mouth. :drink2...
Shovelbuck - I think your scenario is different because you only had a doe tag and shot a buck.
In this scenario the hunter had a valid BUCK tag on him while hunting.
Again, not trying to start a holy war here, just playing a little Devil's Advocate.
I understand that there are some ethics...
Not trying to start a fight or anything, just wanting everyone's thought on this.
This is a great place to discuss game laws. I don't see any harm in discussing this scenario.
If it is illegal, what is illegal about it?
You would be hunting legally with your regular tag that was in your possesion.
Is there anything at all in the regulations that would point to this being illegal?
You bowhunt with a regular statewide anysex tag on your own land. You shoot a buck but decide to give him a couple hours before retrieving because the shot was not perfect. During that time you go and buy a LOT Anysex Bow tag. You come back a hour and a half later, track the buck, find him...
The whole face of hunting is changing. Crop prices, rural residential building, recreational wants... there is a whole host of forces that are just begining to collide... it's the perfect storm, and yes us hunters are not pleased with some of the effects.
Think about this... many of you have...

Alright. So they are good guys, great guys, good ol' boys. The story was amazing! What I thought was most amazing was how someone would admit to having a non-licenced, tag-less friend assist in a hunt... in published print. Amazing!
Anyone think it was weird that the Wensel brothers had a friend "nudge" deer for them while on stand. I thought that if you were in Iowa and wanted to drive, excuse me "nudge" deer towards someone else who was hunting, that you were supposed to have a licence and tag as well. Just wondering...
Drury, Kisky, great hunts, great insight, many different topics relating to an entire hunting season(365 days). Having said that, one would be missing the boat if they did not include Primetime Bucks, for pure entertainment. My favorite series.
