My father in law farms a couple thousand acres. Closer to 1500 now as he lost some rented ground. Also worked full time until retiring a couple years ago. Still has older equipment and an old pick up truck. Used his vacation time to plant and harvest.
His wife also worked making a good salary...
Definitely the guys saying Iowa doesn't have high hunting pressure don't get out much. I know Southern Iowa and the public gets hammered there. Dozens and dozens go through just a couple hundred acres near me. I have security camera that covers the road and proves it. It's a constant highway...
I have a blink system and a couple of weeks ago it started giving a "free trial" with AI description of motion. It will say a black truck is driving by. Or 2 deer are walking. It's been very accurate.
I'm not trying to change anything just made a simple suggestion adding to another members suggestion. I didn't even say I agreed with him but it's the offseason so it doesn't hurt anything to discuss this stuff.
But since you asked weight would be a bonus for those that weigh their deer. And I...
I like that they keep score on size but one could combine the contest to also give bonus points for age and weight. You could give a 50-in bonus for a 7 year old for instance. You could even subtract 20 inches for a 3 year old.
Can you explain this a little further? My son sold his small acreage ( closes soon) and hasn't seen anything he likes yet. He was planning on doing 1031 which means he has 45 days from the day of closing to ID a property if we understand correctly.
What are some cliff note details on the IRA...
We have an active thread where one landowner got two beautiful bucks off his "small" acreage. Do the math and tell me again how 1 buck limit can't make a difference. I'm not calling that landowner out or judging him. They are beautiful bucks. Just illustrating how saying a 1 buck limit wouldn't...
What's odd is there are still groups seeing lots of deer. We saw decent groups of deer 2nd season shotgun. But a drive that used to have 30 plus deer had 20 ish. So down some. A guy that stopped by said his group shot over 40 deer 1st season. Another group I know shot over 20. Both in Southern...
Can't you just cover it during hunting season? Tarped plywood etc. The one by our house I just put a water tank over it. They loved the water until it froze.
I think the quality of our Bucks are dropping much faster than anyone is realizing. We're in the market for a 100-150 acre piece, and I can say very few for sale in the southern Iowa counties we are looking at have trail cam pics that make me want to buy the piece. Most are using pics from 2021...
Funny you mentioned this A buddy of mine shot and hit one a couple weeks ago thought he hit it behind the shoulder had good blood but thought just got one lung the buck shows back up on camera and has a healing wound in its neck. So he was quite a bit off from where he thought he hit it
Just have to hope the hit wasn't too high. 1 could be too high with the flatter trajectory. 2 should be ok. Would've been much better with a downward angle.(Captain obvious )
