Great story! Loved reading it.. I had a friend with a similar situation as you this past week where he wounded a Tom that took off and he left it for a while. He came back later with their short hair and ended up finding the Tom hiding in some brush. May be worth a shot?!?

I have a "shaker gobble" call. After a few soft yelps if you let off a gobble or two that lets that tom know someone else is already there and ready to roll. More times than not that tom will come!

I can understand something like this happening to a fawn, but not a deer like this. It makes me sad to see this a) for the deer, a terrible way to go and then b) he looks like he would of been a pretty nice one next year.

I would wait until spring hands down! Coming into the coldest time of year would be miserable trying to train a pup. I think it would be much easier on you, the wife, and the pup if you waited till spring.

Its a tough oen to score b/c you can't really judge the mass easily. I would guess in the 136-143 range. Probably around 140 give or take a few.
