It's no lie, I'm new to coyote calling. Also adding onto the "every time I see you post it's something else dead" PM list...
About a month ago my dad died very suddenly. It was a shock, one that I doubt I'll ever get over. The day we buried him I got back to my parents place and a truck pulled up, the driver got out, and he said "I need you to sign for this". Immediately I knew what it was but was pretty overcome to really care at the time. You see, Dad owned and operated a gun and archery shop so I knew that something had come in for someone, likely the last thing Dad ever ordered. I was quite disgusted that someone else got the honor of having his last ever order and just threw the box on the counter of the shop and went on in the house. The next day I went out and checked the contents of the box. Much to my surprise I uncovered a heavy barrel Remington 700 model in 22-250. It was a sweet looking gun and I was jealous of whoever ordered it, mostly because it was "Dads last gun".
Fast forward a bit and no one had called or claimed the gun, so after a quick talk with my wife, and then my mom, I ended up paying for the gun and ordering a scope for it. Within a few weeks the package was complete topped off with a Nikon 4x14-40 "Coyote Special" scope. It took me a several deep breaths but I got "Dads gun" sighted in after only 6 shots. I figured eventually I'd try my luck at calling, but didn't think it'd happen this year. You see, my wife had to have a shoulder surgery a few days ago and I didn't know if I'd get out simply because taking care of her was more important than shooting some damn mangy coyote.
Well, today she was feeling good and she let me head out and try my luck. While cleaning up in Dads gun/archery shop I found a digital caller and several Randy Anderson coyote DVD's so in the past few weeks I've pretty much become an expert on coyote calling.
Tonight I made my first set up and called in a Cardinal. The second set up I turned the caller on and did 3 challenge howls and turned it off. Within seconds I had a response! I about crapped myself, it was EERIE to hear a big raspy male howling back! I hit the cottontail distress and a few minutes later 2 'yotes came out of the timber, but jetted back in quickly. I let the caller go for awhile before I decided to head home and check on my wife. 100 yards from the truck the male howled again followed by a female and then the rest of the pack, it was absolutely amazing! I ran back to my tree and hunkered back down, quickly I turned the caller back on and hit the pack with a male challenge howl and then a female challenge howl and followed it with a pack serenade.
Seconds later I had 3 coyotes heading my direction, but it was getting dark fast! At about 175-200 yards the first two grouped up and were sniffing butthole so I centered the dark mass and squeezed the trigger... Upon report the first 'yote dropped and the rest high tailed it outta there! I could barely believe it, my first 'yote and with the unclaimed last gun my Dad ever ordered in. I won't lie, it took a second for me to pull it together, it's as if someone was sitting there with me and then I finally got up and hoofed it over to the mass on the snow. Call it luck or skill, but I put the bullet in the alpha males ear hole and that is the end of that. He is the first coyote I've ever shot with the sole intention of going out and getting one. It was absolutely awesome.
First shot where he lay with a shot of "Dads gun". Pretty big dog.
Second shot is a hero shot that a friend graciously took for me. Again, I'm not a small guy, this is a BIG coyote.
