4 for 6

This past weekend was the one weekend we turkey hunted. The weather was tough but 4 of the 6 tags were filled! One thing we learned is we need to be a lot more mobile... or a lot more patient, one of the two. Bowhunting out of blinds was fun, but sitting in those things for hours and hours and hours in the nasty weather and not seeing any birds can wear on a guy. We learned though, that grabbing a shotgun, camera, and going after the birds can be a ton of fun though! Here are some pictures of the weekends harvest!

First bird down was shot by dad's friend Marv Pottebaum... and dad. They had 7 strutters and some hens working a field across from them. After some calling one tom broke from the group and came right in to them. Marv shot shot the bird at 10yds, it dropped, got up, and just as it was about to fly off dad knocked him down for good. Funny thing was the night before Marv was giving dad a hard time for shooting a buck called T-rex after Russ had shot him... (see Hunting with a P urpose volume 2)... well Marv had to eat his words now! Never a dull moment when those two hunt together!

Next bird down was shot by our cousin Mathew with his dad Tim along. They set up in a box blind that turkeys love to walk around. After first light a bird flew down a long ways from them but began to work towards them (thanks to Caleb Mason and Matt Hoffert's calling as they were trying to call the birds to themselves! ) Well as the bird worked toward Caleb and Matt it walked too close to Mathew and at 30yds he dropped the tom!

In this picture you can see Caleb and Matt's blind...

Next bird was shot Saturday afternoon by Ben Michael. Him and David Bermeister went out to an area all sorts of wildlife like to hang out. Just after getting set they had a tom answer their call a long ways off. But an hour and a half later this bird had worked his way through the timber, across the corn field, and into 30yds where Ben dropped him!

Last bird shot was by Preston Feller. My brother Russ spotted 2 toms and some hens in a spot that setup well for a stalk. They snuck in on the birds, hid behind a couple round bales, and waited. An hour later the birds walked by the bales and Preston dropped the first tom at 40yds!

The weather was tough and we didn't see and hear many turkeys. But just as everyone left Sunday afternoon the sun came out and the birds came out everywhere... figures.
