Just came across this article in today's Ames Trib:

DES MOINES (AP) -- Two Arkansas men face charges of illegal hunting involving deer shot in November within the city limits near the Des Moines International Airport.
Shane B. Fryar and David A. Donahone, both of Berryville, Ark., were being held Monday on $160,000 bond each at the Polk County jail. No trial date had been set.
They were charged with illegally taking deer, having a loaded gun in a motor vehicle and shooting from the road. Other charges included illegal use of a mobile transmitter and conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.
Craig Lonneman, DNR conservation officer for Polk County, said officers recovered seven deer shot in the area.
"Some of these animals were some of the larger antlered deer in the metro area," Lonneman said.
Lonneman said a farmer called Nov. 23 about a suspicious vehicle park in an area where he had recently received several illegal hunting complaints.

Hope they rack the dirtbags good and ship 'em back to Arkansas on a rail!

Two poachers + a cage filled with angry raccoons and hungry rats = fun to be had by all.......Oh, wait, this is the 21st century. Nevermind.

Honestly though, I hope they get the book thrown at them (not literally, contrary to what my opening sentence might allude to) and are made examples of to deter anybody that thinks they can come to our state and get away with this crap. I applaud our DNR for working hard daily to protect our wildlife and snuff out poaching.

This is a perfectly acceptable method of "hunting" in Arkansas. These guys are most likely "living legends" back home.

My ex father-in-law had some Arkansas blood in him and he'd weld a truck door on the front of his tree stand just to get that old familiar feeling when he shot !

Here are some details...

POACHERS NABBED NEAR DES MOINES AIRPORT

DES MOINES – The Iowa DNR charged two Arkansas men with illegally taking five deer in November. The deer were taken within the Des Moines city limits, near the Des Moines International Airport.

The men charged are Shane B. Fryar, 565 County Road 450, Berryville, Ark., and David A. Donahoe, 615 County Road 450, Berryville, Ark. The DNR is still investigating at least two more people in two different states related to illegally taking deer in the Des Moines area. The case remains under investigation.

The deer were shot early in the morning or late in the evening. The men would pass up many antlered deer before taking the larger animals, said Craig Lonneman, DNR conservation officer for Polk County.

"Some of these animals were some of the larger antlered deer in the metro area," Lonneman said.

The case began when a concerned farmer called Lonneman on Nov. 23 about a suspicious vehicle parked near the corner of SW McKinley and SW 45th St. Lonneman had received several illegal hunting complaints in the same area in recent days.

Lonneman, Conservation Officer Craig Cutts and Des Moines police recovered an 8-point buck identified as being shot by Fryer near the Great Western Trail. Officers then searched the room at Motel 6 on SW McKinley where the men were staying and found several precursors for manufacturing methamphetamine and a photo album with pictures of Fryer and Donahoe posing with several large antlered deer. Officers identified seven deer that were shot in the area west of the Des Moines airport.

Officers also identified photos of four large antlered deer taken illegally in Arkansas and one antlered deer taken illegally in Illinois.

Officers then searched a job box and freezer at the RR Donnely belonging to Fryar and Donahoe.

The DNR seized two rifles, one shotgun, two bows, two freezers, five large deer racks, several deer capes and packages of meat and numerous pieces of hunting equipment. The items totaled nearly $5,500.

A total of seven deer were recovered and additional charges could be coming.

"This case was made largely due to the efforts of a concerned farmer who took the time to notice a suspicious pickup near an area previously known to have illegal hunting complaints," Lonneman said.

Fryar was charged with three counts of illegally taking deer, three counts of loaded gun in a motor vehicle, two counts of shooting a rifle from a road, three counts of no nonresident deer tag, one count of no nonresident small game license, one count of no habitat fee, one count of illegal use of a mobile transmitter, two counts of attempting to take deer, conspiracy to manufacture schedule II, possession precursors and possession with intent to deliver.

Donahoe was charged with two counts of illegally taking deer, two counts of loaded gun in a motor vehicle, two counts of shooting a rifle from a road, two count so no nonresident deer tag, one count of no nonresident small game license, one count of no habitat fee, one count of illegal use of mobile transmitter, one count of attempt to take deer, conspiracy to manufacture schedule II, possession precursor and possession with intent to deliver.

All the hunting charges are simple misdemeanors with an additional civil penalty of $4,000 for each illegal deer. All drug charges are felonies. Fryar and Donahoe are being held on $160,000 bond at the Polk County jail.

Notice that this all started with a tip from a concerned citizen. I think there are about a thousand of us on this website. Lets all chip in and give the conservation officers a hand. They are doing the best they can but they need information. Look at it as improving the image of sportsmen.

Old Buck,

Thanks for the extra info. Sounds like they'll do some time on the drug charges and the rest is going to cost them as well.

As you indicated, we all need to do our part to help out the CO's when we see something suspicious, especially when it takes the biggest bucks out of the gene pool, even when they're "city" deer.
