AZ Elk Hunting!!

AZHunter

Iowa Boy At Heart
The AGFD has been hitting credit cards for the elk/pronghorn draw the last couple of days. I called my credit card this morning and found out there is a pending charge from AGFD. The amount told me that my daughter and a family friend got drawn for an elk tag this fall!! This will be her first elk hunt and it was her first time applying! Same for our friends' son! I have two VERY EXCITED kids to take elk hunting this fall. They are both cow tags in a wilderness unit just outside of town and I know where there are plenty of elk in there! As we were driving back from hiking the Grand Canyon (kids did GREAT), I was thinking of where I should put my trail camera up there to keep an eye on a couple of herds.

I'm still waiting to see if I get drawn for an archery bull tag, but I honestly don't care if I do. I get to take my daughter on her first elk hunt!!! GREAT DAY TODAY!!:D

Did I mention that I'm excited to take my daughter elk hunting late September/early October??

Congrats buddy, knowing the area around town I am looking forward to some harvest pics!!!

Good luck to the youngsters.
I know you will put them on some.
Keep us posted and post some pictures with the trail cam.

I am still checking my card everyday nothing yet. 2 of my other iowa friends had there cards hit on Friday. I will go to help them so at least I get to go no matter what. We hunt basically in the same area that AZ hunter family drew there cow tags. Congrats to all that have drawn so far.

Also to AZ hunter how has the winter moisture been so far this year.

Our winter has been the worst since I've lived here. The west side of the Peaks may be ok due to the snow that Snow Bowl made, but otherwise, it was a non-existent winter. Two weeks ago, I attended my annual wildfire refresher class and the first topic was what has happened and what is predicted and how that will play into wildfire potential and fuel loading. We've been way below average across the state, but there is a prediction that this high pressure ridge will shift out of here in April/May and we will have a late, wet spring, similar to 2009 (almost no fire season in AZ). There is also a prediction for another big monsoon season down here. Stay tuned and keep in touch if you want updates, etc.

Thanks for the update hope you get some rains there. It has always amazed me how much the moisture can change the hunt and the quality of the bulls. I drew the first time in 2002 a bad drought hunted the whole season never herd a bugle. Drew again in 2006 crazy rut. Hope for some rain for the people with tags.
