From the Iowa DNR:

Four Escape Injury Following Boat Incident on Missouri River

SALIX - A Nebraska boater and three other passengers escaped serious injury over the Memorial Day weekend when he apparently fell asleep and ran his vessel into the river bank.

Russell Flessner, 42, of Fremont, Neb., was charged with reckless operation after the 20-foot runabout he was operating ran up on shore and into a tree on the bank of the Missouri River near Salix shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday.

"I think the fact that he hit the tree may have actually saved lives by preventing the boat from rolling over and throwing them out. This very well could have been a multiple fatality incident," said DNR Conservation Officer Steve Griebel.

Also on board were Deanne Amato, 42, of Lavista, NE, Logan Kellner, 18, of Lincoln, NE and Taylor Flessner, 17, of Wahoo, NE, Other than a few cuts and bruises, all escaped injury, said Griebel.

"I think the lesson here is that a combination of sun, wind and waves can have an affect on people and tire them out," said Griebel.

Griebel said the boat had all of the required safety equipment on board, but none of the passengers were wearing lifejackets at the time of the collision.

"Boaters always want to be prepared for what can happen on the water. No one expects to be thrown from a boat. Having lifejackets on when the unexpected occurs saves lives," Griebel said.
