calling does

I know a lot of people have asked about calling bucks via grunt, rattling, and lures but I was wondering what some of you guys do as far as trying to get does in.I mean,I plan on shooting some does and in the past it really has been just a wait and see approach towards them.Does anyone here use calls like fawn bleats or anything to try to lure the does in??????

Last year during late muzzleloader, I busted a couple of does in a timbered strip along the east fork of the Des Moines in NW Ia. Wind was in my favor so I moved over about 50 yards near base of a big tree and gave a couple of fawn bleats. Within a minute, I had between 15 and 20 does scattered between 25 and 75 yards of me ... it was unbelievable. Picked out the largest one that gave me the clearest shot and filled the tag.
Was using the Lohman variable tube call that goes from fawn bleat to dominant buck by turning a pin that lengthens/shortens the reed. Made a believer out of me, especially late season!

This might sound crazy, but I can’t bring myself to use a fawn distress cry to call in a doe. Although I have tried it when a buck is following a doe, to get the buck to follow her to me (didn’t work, darn it.) I just can’t use her instinct to protect her baby against her. Maybe it’s a chick thing. “But Kat,†you say, “Isn’t it hypocritical to use calls that take advantage of a bucks instinct to procreate against him?†Well, yes kind of. I guess that’s a chick thing too...

This crazy guy I know picks up a bunch of small pebbles and carries them to his tree. he said if there is a doe that wont come in range foraging in the timber. he starts dropping pebbles out every so slowly to sound like nuts falling off the tree, sounds nuts but he always get a doe this way opening night, if they hang up. I have yet to try it, so no guarantees lol

Kat, you are funny. But, your doe scenario is one reason I'm glad that I'm not a chick. That one, plus the fact that the world is my toilet.

Liv, that's a great idea, I wouldn't have a problem doing that.

Camo...sorry, but nothing beats having multiple...uh...pairs of shoes...

Similar to the post about dropping pebbles, I have taken a bag of acorns with me before and purposely dropped one about every 2-3 minutes from my stand. I can't say for sure that the deer that appeared would have come in otherwise or not, but my feeling is that this helped bring them in.

It also doesn't hurt to be sitting in an oak tree at the time. I think the deer hear that sound and recognize the dinner bell. I can tell you that before I read this post I was planning that tactic for this Friday evening.

I also make a point of the acrons hitting leaves, etc, on the way down. I try to make it sound like a squirrel is high up in the tree cutting nuts and the deer will come over and begin nosing around right where they have been falling. I have never seen it spook deer yet and one time several years ago I was purposely dropping acorns on the back of a forkie that was right at the base of my tree. He showed no sign of alarm as I easily clonked him about 15 times. I was in greater danger of spooking him from my muffled laughter than from the many acorns bouncing off his back.
