Chronic Wasting Disease Found Near Gillette, Wyoming

SHERIDAN, Wyo. (AP) — A mule deer harvested in northeast Wyoming has tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

Wyoming Game and Fish officials reported Monday that the animal was harvested from an area northeast of Gillette where the disease had not previously been found.

Chronic wasting is a neurological disease that's deadly to deer, elk and moose. Game and Fish has been asking hunters to submit samples from their animals to find out whether those animals have the disease.
The disease last year turned up in a mule deer buck southeast of Ten Sleep and in a bull elk southwest of Buffalo.

Wildlife officials in neighboring Montana have been tracking the disease's progression in Wyoming, but no cases have yet been reported among wild animals in Montana.
