Questions Doom Bear Hunt for 2009

4/24/2009

San Luis Obispo County, Calif. has reconsidered the first black bear hunting season proposal after residents raised many questions about the season’s regulations.

The state’s Fish and Game Department voted Tuesday to postpone the season until next year to address the questions and recommendations of those opposed to the black bear hunting season.

More than 40 groups as well as the county Board of Supervisors went on record to oppose the bear hunt.

“Thanks to the commission’s reluctance to adopt this controversial proposal, black bears will continue to have the freedom to roam in San Luis Obispo County,” Jeff Kuyper, Forest Watch executive director.

The season was proposed because of nuisance bear complaints, bear/vehicle collisions, and the department’s monitoring of scented-bait stations. Apparently, the numbers were large enough for the department to recommend the proposed hunting season.

The department will revisit the black bear hunt proposal next year after further examination of California mammal hunting regulations.
