Double Success: Small-time to make it big-time!

Well, I am a happy hunter right now... I arrowed 2 deer in the last 48 hours. They were both bucks... one spike that counted as a fawn buck in MN so I could use a bonus tag on it and the other was a little 3-pointer... nothing to brag about except that I made 2 double lung 5 yard harvests in a 48 hour time frame. I had to use my buck/doe tag on the 3-pointer so no more buck hunting for me up here in MN. I am usually very, very picky when it comes to bucks but this year when that 3-pointer walked straight to my mock scrape setup I decided in my mind NOT to take the shot but then I drew back I spontaneously concluded that his genetics needed to be harvested out of the area... so what the heck... I let that arrow fly. I'm 21 years old and already have restricted myself to extremely high trophy standards but in that fraction of second when I was peaking through my peep site I became 'temporarily smart' and figured that it is never too late to add more practice and preparation for taking one of the big boys by taking one of his younger brothers now. Now that I cannot purchase another buck tag, I 'll have to resort to bonus doe tags and video taping deer. I guess it is a season of herd management and learning for me. There is honor in taking the smaller ones... and when I do get another king of the forest he will be all the more special. But hey, 2 arrowed deer in 48 hours, I'll take that. I'm a happy hunter and happy hunting to you.

Congratulations Buckhuntingboy! What makes these deer trophies is not the size of their antlers. What makes them trophies is that you read the sign well enough to put yourself where the deer would be, you were able to fool an animal whose senses are specifically developed for survival, and you had the skill to make a lethal shot with a primitive weapon at the moment of truth. Far more people will be unsuccessful at this then are successful. Good job! Geez, I sound like my dad.

Congratulations, and I agree with the practice. That will pay off when you are shooting at a nice buck in the years to come.
