Dubuque Man Charged with Illegally Selling Fish
Posted: December 1, 2009

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Daniel Westemeier, 65, from Dubuque, has been charged with unlawful commercialization of wildlife for selling fish. On October 10, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources charged Westemeier with no commercial fishing license and unlawful commercialization of wildlife for unlawfully selling catfish.

State conservation officers, along with a U.S. Fish and Wildlife officer, served a search warrant at Westemeier's residence on October 2, and found 99 packages of catfish, 6 packages containing approximately 159 bluegills caught from the Mississippi River, which is 109 bluegills over the legal limit, and a scale used to weigh the packages. A number of items were seized from the residence including a fishing boat and new freezer owned by Westemeier.

The unlawful commercialization of wildlife is a serious misdemeanor and requires a court appearance.

"This case could not have been investigated without the information received from the public or without the number of officers involved in the yearlong investigation," said Andrew Keil, state conservation officer for Dubuque County. "I strongly encourage anyone with information of illegal fish or game activity to report those activities, especially since the number of conservation officers has been reduced in the last couple of years."
