Fish Kill in Delaware County

Dan Goedken, a hog producer from rural New Vienna, accidentally left a valve open on a manure transfer pump about two miles east of Petersburg in Delaware County shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Upon discovery of the mistake, Goedken took immediate action to shut off the valve and build a retention dike to minimize flow into nearby Bear Creek. Goedken also contacted the DNR regarding the spill. An estimated 2,000 to 5,000 gallons of liquid hog manure had spilled by the time the valve was closed and an unknown amount reached the creek causing a fish kill.

The DNR is following up on the fish kill, with fisheries staff conducting a fish kill count. As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, about one mile of stream has been affected. Most of the dead fish are suckers, redhorse and minnows.

The DNR will continue to monitor the situation and take enforcement action as appropriate.
