DNR Investigates Two Fish Kills in Southeast Iowa
Posted: August 12, 2009

WASHINGTON - The DNR is investigating two fish kills that occurred Tuesday, one in Keokuk County and the other in Johnson County.

About 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, several bridge workers called in a fish kill in German Creek southeast of Sigourney. The workers saw fish trying to leap out of the water, indicating a toxic substance flowing through the stream.

Tuesday night, DNR staff found dead catfish, bluegills and minnows. Field water samples showed low levels of ammonia and there was no odor, ruling out manure as a likely cause.

The investigation will continue and laboratory results from water samples may help determine the cause and source of the toxic substance.

In Johnson County, the DNR investigated a fish kill on Picayune Creek northeast of Kalona Wednesday. Specialists found dead fish, high ammonia levels and odor after a property owner reported manure odors late Tuesday night. The investigation continues, as DNR specialists search for the source. Dead suckers, chubs and minnows were found in the stream.
