Keeping Gray Wolf on Endangered List Prompts U.S. Suit

6/9/2009

After reconsidering its decision to remove gray wolves from the endangered species listing in Wyoming, the federal government is now being sued by the state as of last Tuesday.

Wyoming is demanding that the federal government hand over the right to manage the species as they see fit.

The states that had the gray wolf protective hunting ban lifted, like Montana and Idaho, are currently under fire, however. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are being sued by several of the Defenders of Wildlife and other conservation groups, because proper timing of when to repopulate the species wasn’t given, and because the delisting of the animal could possibly cause a severe decline in gray wolf numbers.
