How far along

On a percentage scale, how far along are the whitetails antlers? Obviously it is going to be different for other parts of the country. My location is Central Iowa.

Im no expert so Im just guessing.
I would guess my deer are 40% of what there going to have. Actual score would be even more tough to tell, becuase I think they gain some mass in the end of the growing before the antler starts to harden.

Maybe Im way off, maybe its more like 75%???

completely depends on the area, the food sources, and mainly the deer itself. I've seen bucks that I know from the past that have barely started 2 &3s but then I've seen other deer that I know have to be 80% of their max size. Just depends... you can't put out a general percentage on the entire population. I would say its a deer by deer basis.

That's what I've been seeing. Sat over an oats field last night and had 11 bucks come out. A few had good sized racks and some were just starting 2's and 3's. Some bucks are just ahead of the pack right now but all will even out. My buddy saw a mainframe 12 two weeks ago fencing that was pushing 170" already. I'm playing the camera game with him so we'll see if I can get a picture of him soon.

It's a great time of the year to be out and scouting. You can see the inventory of bucks that will be around and what they are looking like this year. Last night I had a buck that I've past two years in a row come out and it was neat to see him and what he's become. I figure him a 4 1/2 year old and this year he went from an eight to a mainframe nine with a drop/kicker off his right g-2.

So will you be wacking him this year? Or giving him yet another year?

Maybe it's the same as when deer drop antlers. Some are 2 or more months different- not that growth would be that drasically different. BUT, maybe some started 2-3 weeks earlier than others (I've seen deer carrying last year's antlers when others are popping up new growth.).
I'd keep your photos in date groups from year to year. You could look at many pics from July 1-7 and then compare to when you get your late September/October photos of them or whatever. If you journal and compare this from each week in the summer to their final package of headgear, it should be quite telling.

Biologists have said the whitetail is 90% grown by mid July. So right now 75-80% should be pretty accurate.
