From the Iowa DNR:
Illegally Taking Bullfrogs Lands Muscatine Man in Jail
June 16, 2009
A Muscatine man faces more than $2,700 in fines after being arrested and charged with numerous fishing violations on Saturday evening.
Bradley V. Honts, 26, was charged with 12 counts of taking and possessing bullfrogs without a valid fishing license while being under suspension and 15 counts of taking and having possession of bullfrogs over the legal daily bag limit while under suspension.
The charges were filed by an Iowa Conservation Officer after Honts was observed at a private pond near West Liberty on Saturday. Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials seized 27 bullfrogs, a fishing rod, and a spear from Honts during the investigation.
In addition, Honts was arrested and charged by the West Liberty Police Department for driving while barred in connection with the same incident. The charge is an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison term not to exceed two years and a fine of up to $6,250.
Honts fishing privileges were suspended for three years in 2007 by the Iowa DNR under the DNR's multiple offender program after being convicted of five violations involving sport turtle trapping in Muscatine County.
The daily bag limit for bullfrogs in Iowa is 12. Iowa law requires a sport fishing license in order for a person to take or possess bullfrogs. Honts is currently being held in the Muscatine County Jail. A court date is pending.
