BIG change! Eliminated in all the usual southern counties. Only 2 counties left up in the NE corner of the state. Big applause what a fantastic change! This has to be a huge stop and helping maintain and even rebuild some areas with low numbers. Along the way, protecting shed bucks and help improve age class. I’m curious does anyone have any Intel on how this newly implemented change came about?? I have to assume hunter’s voices the last few years have been listened to. Change back in a conservation minded direction is never easy. What a big win for the resource!

Common sense was heard & enacted. It helps when leadership has common sense to begin with. Then they hear from hunters & conservation groups. Zero doubt this was critically needed.
Things can change. Government can improve & do the right things. Be thankful we live in iowa- the land of common sense.

Very jealous! Coming from a guy in MO.. :)

Please someone correct me if I’m wrong but It looks like 5 counties down south are still on the list. Monroe Lucas Appanoose Wayne and Decatur say the season extends to the 25th if more than 100 tags still remain. Hopefully that’s not the case as a lot of areas in those counties need a break.

All 5 of those counties have been eliminated.

So are the extra seasons still in effect if the counties don’t sell out all their doe tags? That’s my issue in Guthrie the last 2 years. The numbers are way down and they haven’t sold out all the doe tags by the end of the season so they extend it which is ridiculous because obviously they haven’t sold out because there’s not enough deer to shoot. I think they dropped the quota by 200 which is not even close to what it should be.

No. Thats what this reg eliminates.

Those 2 counties aren’t booming with deer anymore either…. Would have loved to see it closed for a year or two for some rebound. My farm (Allamakee) went from seeing 20 deer a sit to 2…last year we went a few days with seeing zero
My home farm has been better the last few years and this is NOT a deer county

I used to support dep tags but never liked the idea of a depredation season and/or the January antlerless season. I live in an area where locally the deer can definitely be overpopulated in small pockets but on a county wide scale the population is relatively low. In the limited timber there are plenty of deer tho and many times the landowners don’t hunt and there are few if any county wide doe tags. The county wide deer population is somewhat irrelevant and not a great measure of population density in the areas with habitat in much of the state. Dep tags were really the only option to kill a few does unless you wanted to burn your anysex tag.. Yesterday I talked to a kid that shot “8 does” last year…. “Was kind of too bad tho cuz 4 of them ended up being nubbin bucks.. Not like anyone can tell while you’re shootin them!” Wow.. This kid would never be confused as a member of the Mensa club or anything so it wasn’t exactly surprising to hear that from him but was still just hard to believe that that happened. If there’s too many people around like him it gets pretty hard to support any of it.

I really hope this is a done deal and it for sure removed the late antlerless “ rifle season” and the excess tag season. These were separate seasons but ran concurrently. The legal weapons were also different allowing rifles as small as .223 during the excess season but the late anterless was .24 or larger. Great news either way this will be one more step in helping get the herd back in shape.
