Johnson County Whitetails

Hey I am a new member and currently planning on moving(Ohio) to the Iowa City area next January. I know that Iowa has quality whitetails throughout the state(thats is why I am moving to Iowa lol)but was wondering if anyone hunted near that area and could inform me about the hunting in that area. Thanks

Paul,
For the most part it is good hunting. The ground around the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids area is tough to gain permission to hunt due to the number of hunters in the area. However, you can still find decent pieces of property to hunt with knocking on doors. There is also some good public ground around if you do your homework.

There are more than a few of us on this site that hunt the Johnson County area. Hunting can be excellent IF you can gain access to private ground, though I know some who have pretty good luck out at the Hawkeye Wildlife Area (federal public ground). If you are willing to travel out of Johnson County, I find gaining permission is easier.

The minute you get outside of the Iowa City and cedar rapids limits 30 miles in any direction the hunting remains fairly good and the access is 100x easier. I have been lucky enough to pick up some ground within a few miles of city limits, but it took me years of working on it to gain access.

The Coralville Reservoir has a PILE of public hunting on it. If you're not scared of a little walk then you can get into some great hunting. If you have a boat you're in business. Otherwise 45 minutes will put you on the doorsteps of a lot of great ground.
