land question

Given the choice(you win the powerball or your mother-in-law passes away)- you can purchase 1000 acres of Iowa ground. Would you rather have 1000 acre block, 5-200 acre blocks, or 10-100 acre blocks? Why?

1000 straight up. I would like to have family and friends hunt with me and have enough room for everyone in one place. There would likely be a good opportunity to have diversity on a large property like that. I like to hunt waterfowl and pheasant. Also, having a large piece like that, it wouldn't bother me one bit if someone I didn't know asked politely to hunt.

Well if ya have good neighbors I'd do the 1000 with no roads cutting in and a square block so the fences are easy to up keep. Hey whens my mother-in law going away

I guess it depends on the lay of the land.

I would imagine that the 1,000 acre plot would have plenty of hardwoods, a fair amount of slough, a good mix of high and low ground, a good amount of water with a good amount of area for food plots. There's just so much more a guy can do with a BIG plot of land versus a bunch of smaller ones. With a 1,000 acres...you could deem an area of it as "off limits" to all hunting. That would serve as a safe zone for the deer to hang out at. Depending on what bordered your property, once the land around your area gets any type of pressure, guess where the deer are going to go? Your safe zone. Managing the deer herd on it would be tougher, but that's a problem I would LOVE to have!!

1000. You could actually manage deer because they will not stray too far. You could also control who went on your property a little better.

(2) 250 acre sections and 1 500 acre section spread out. Not all areas will produce the same quality of bucks and I would want to ensure a good buck somewhere every year.

I would want the 1000 acres in one chunk. Create a sanctuary, leave standing corn, plant food plots man it would be great.

I'd have to go with the 1000 acre block, hands down! QDM is pretty hard on smaller chunks.
Now you got us all dreaming pharmer!!

I'm dreaming too. I know the argument for a large block but I'm still leaning the other way. If you consider the boundary of a large block, the travel of bucks, and abundant food in Iowa- I'm not sure that you can even keep "your deer" on that 1000. Even a 1/4 mile from any fenceline isn't a big deal for deer to roam off and cross the fence. Anyway- nice problem to think about.

And while I'm dreaming, I will include one of the tallest bluffs and longest private shorelines over looking the ol' Miss. Might as well include a nasty section of old growth river bottom also.

You do have a good point pharmer....I have property quite some ways from my home, which can be a pain as far as planting foodplots, policing it and even getting there to hunt it...on the plus side though, I know I'm hunting completely different deer. Makes it interesting and I'm less likely to "burn out" a spot as if I had it all in one block.
I'd just like to add, that when you win that powerball lotto, I'd like to be first in line to request to be your new best friend!!

I'd take the 1000 acre block for QDM reasons. I'd pass on River Bttm Boys tallest bluff deal. Nice view but I wouldn't wanna drag a 280 pound booner out of one of those draws (or should I say canyons) in twenty years! I also would like the larger piece to be able to take friends and family hunting with me.

Your avatar pimps you out as a dreamer! with that said, I believe I would do the 1K tract and make shure it had buffers from other hunters. narly survival cover that would enshure survival through the age classes would also be a must. Revenue would be cool to, but if I was a lotto baby, I might forgo the revenue for massive bone!

On a thousand acres, you could wind up hunting one deer family/herd. Now two 500 acre parcels or four 250's (provided the cover is right), you could maximize your chance of seeing at least one really decent deer per year. Heck, 20 acres in just the right spot..... As Ironwood says, "location, location, location!"

If I was going to live on the property, give me the 1000 acre chunk to insulate me. If I was just going to live nearby and hunt it, I would take two 500 acre chunks about 5-8 miles apart in order to hunt two seperate herds. Yep, nice problem to have.

Thanks for that. How about this one "press hard it's cheap carbon"

1000 all the way. I am sure there would continue to be a turn over in the herd genetics by normal whitetail dispertion. Very little could trump the continous piece by my way of thinking.

I would prefer 4 separate 250 acre areas, provided they were in high quality areas with some restraint/QDM being practiced in the area. I like the variety aspect and 250 acres is a big enough area to manage it nicely and to spread out a bit to have good quality hunting.

I would not suffer from any illusions though that all of the bucks would spend their whole life on any of the 250 acre patches, but I really don't think they would ALWAYS stay on a 1000 acre block either. I think you could provide enough food and cover on 1000 acres to keep them there almost always, but when Mr. Big gets behind a hot doe at the right time of the year he could end up ANYWHERE right at the time most serious hunters are waiting for him, even if they have never seen him before.

Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law Pharmer.

I would take the 1000 acres in one block everytime.

Mainly because I like to just walk out the back door at anytime and just be there.

Driving all over the place and trying to keep track of 4 different pieces would be a pain.

You would need some help hunting 1000 acres though!
