DNR Traces Manure in Clay County Stream

The DNR responded to a call about manure in a small stream northeast of Peterson in Clay County Monday morning.

The DNR specialists traced the manure to a 4000-head swine confinement owned by Bruce Click of Peterson. Click said he pumped liquid manure from under-building pits to a nearby field after a water line broke, flooding the pits. He was unaware that the manure was leaving the field.

Field tests showed elevated ammonia levels in an unnamed stream downstream of the application field. The stream flows about two miles before entering the Little Sioux River. DNR staffers are checking the creek to see if ammonia has affected fish and other aquatic life.

The DNR will continue to monitor the situation in the stream and consider appropriate enforcement action.
