Southern Michigan Deer Hunters Allowed to Use Crossbows

For the first time in southern Michigan, anyone 12 and older can use a crossbow during any hunting season.

Open bow-and-arrow deer hunting season began last Thursday and has Jackson hunters scurrying to buy crossbow equipment in local sporting goods stores.

Before the recent decision to allow any licensed hunter to use a crossbow, only those with disabilities could apply for a permit for a crossbow.

Russ Mason, DNR wildlife chief, said everyone who legally uses a crossbow must get a free stamp from the DNR.

Michigan’s DNR said that with the implementation of the new crossbow rules it hopes to expand hunting opportunities and encourage new hunters to take up the sport as well as keep experienced hunters active.

The state has distributed more than 20,000 stamps so far according to Mason.
