Michigan Removes Wolves From Endangered List

4/28/2009

Gray wolves were removed this week from Michigan’s endangered and threatened species list.

Michigan reclassified the wolves as a “protected nongame species” due to federal government plans to remove gray wolves from the endangered species list on May 4.
Animal rights activist groups have already filed intent to sue in federal courts over the removal of the species from the list.

“Wolves will remain under management of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service until May 4,” said Brian Roell, Department of Natural Resources wolf program coordinator. “At that time, management authority will transfer to the state, assuming the process is not held up by litigation from a third party.”

After the removal of the wolf from Michigan endangered species lists, state DNR authorities, pet owners and landowners will have the ability to lethally remove wolves that are killing livestock or pets.
