Here are a few pics from a trip myself and another member (VBALLHNTR) took to Montana. We had a great hunt minus the 30+mph winds, 19-degree lows, no running water, DRAFTY outhouse and no phone reception within 30miles!
Called the double in Monday afternoon as they came in with three other jakes. My buddy shot the first one and I was able to get the remaining bird to come around the tree to the decoys for number two.
Tuesday opened with 30 mph winds so we decided to sleep in and drive around glassing...but to no avail. Stopped the truck late morning to check a pasture and out the driver side spot a nice mule deer shed! Being a bit of a shedhead (and not finding any birds) we decided to walk instead. Within 5 minutes I pick up a nice 8pt set and decide we're gonna do this until late afternoon. Tuesday night we set the blind in the same location as the night before because there was at least one more in the area. Pretty slow until last light when 5 turkeys fly up. Too dark to see exactly what they were and too windy to hear gobbles. With nothing else to go on we decide to leave everything and come back in the morning.
Wednesday we woke to clear & calm skies however the temp was a balmy 19 degrees...which neither of us were prepared for! It turned out all five birds were hens and we could only stand to sit in the blind for about an hour and a half. At this point driving around looking for birds seemed MUCH more appealing. We located and worked a couple different birds but no luck so we shed hunted a bit more and picked up a few more. Wednesday night we went back to an area that had a hot bird a few hours before and decided to wait him out until dark. We had one gobble shortly after settling in so the waiting game began. About an hour before dark he came through and my buddy was able to dump him out the back of the blind as he seemed content skirting the decoys!
